Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape Launches Campaign
The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) recently launched its new teen sexual violence prevention campaign. Targeting youth ages 11-15, the campaign is “designed to inform and educate teens about statutory rape/sexual assault and sexual violence awareness and prevention, and to provide resources to assist teens in seeking help.”

All campaign materials address issues of sexual violence, including rape, statutory rape, date/acquaintance rape, incest, and sexual harassment, among others. The materials were chosen in response to focus groups conducted with the age groups targeted.

The campaign’s major components include Xpose, a 10-track CD of music by Pennsylvania artists; TEENesteem, a 22-page teen magazine for girls; and a new web site, teenpcar.com.

“Teenagers are more at risk for sexual victimization than any other age group, and this campaign provides innovative ways of not only reaching them but also educating them about prevention and healing,” said Delilah Rumburg, executive director of PCAR.

The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape is a statewide nonprofit organization working at state and national levels to raise awareness of sexual violence, change harmful attitudes, and provide support to those affected by the crime.

CREDC Receives Job Creation Grant
Representative Mark McNaughton recently announced the awarding of a $1.25 million grant to the Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC) for a business development and job-creating project in Dauphin County.

The Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) approved the loan for Computer Aid, Inc., an Allentown-based computer software company, to acquire and renovate an existing building located on Friendship Road in Harrisburg.

“We’ve worked really hard with county officials and business leaders to make Dauphin County an attractive destination for new businesses,” said McNaughton. “It’s important for us to have powerful economic development tools to continue building a job-friendly climate.”

“Although our industrial and manufacturing roots remain an important component of the regional economy, we need to continue encouraging the growth of technology-based jobs and businesses in the area,” he continued. “A diverse economy is the key to long-term prosperity.”

PIDA provides low-interest loans through local industrial development corporations for land and building acquisition and construction or renovation, resulting in retention and creation of jobs.

“Band of Brothers” Paratroopers Honored
A special Veteran’s Day observance was held in the Capitol’s House Chamber to honor the dedication and sacrifice of five Pennsylvanians who were members of the legendary World War II paratrooper unit known as Easy Company. A House citation was presented to each man.

The honored men are surviving members of Easy Company — the 101st Airborne, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The Regiment was recently profiled in Stephen Ambrose’s book, Band of Brothers, and is the focus of the HBO mini-series of the same name.

After assaulting artillery batteries overlooking the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Easy Company fought in the battle to liberate Holland, defended Bastogne, Belgium, in the Battle of the Bulge, and captured Hitler’s Eagles’ Nest hideaway near the end of the war.
