Trips Festival 2001
November 10
Chameleon Club, Lancaster
What a long, strange trip it’s been. In the late ’60s, bands like
The Grateful Dead and Big Brother and The Holding Company would play epic
freak-outs at Bill Graham’s Fillmore, using both audio and visual inputs
to expand the mind. In celebration of “35 years of freaking the squares”
the Trips Festival 2001 rolls into the Chameleon Club on November 10.
Jefferson Starship, featuring original members of Jefferson Airplane
(whose radio hits “White Rabbit” and “Somebody To Love” helped launch the
Summer Of Love), will co-bill with retrospective newcomers Blue Floyd.
Blue Floyd is an all-star configuration of psychedelic cowboys who explore
blues reinterpretations of Pink Floyd classics. The line-up includes Matt
Abts (Gov’t Mule), Marc Ford (Black Crowes), Johnny Neel (Allman
Brothers), and Berry Oakley (Robbie Krieger Band). A light show will
intensify the experience.
The Chameleon Club is located at 233 North Water Street, Lancaster. For
tickets and information, call the Chameleon Club hotline at 393-7133.

Exhibit: Wounds and Wombs –
Paintings and Ceramics by Ré Desabres
November 17
Opening Reception: November 17, 4p.m.-8p.m.
Center for Women’s Creative Expression
The
Center for Women’s Creative Expression will present its first solo
exhibit, running from November 17 through January 28. An opening reception
for the exhibition will take place November 17 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m.
Entitled “Wounds and Wombs,” the exhibit is filled entirely with the
paintings and ceramics of local painter and potter Ré Desabres. Desabres
created expressionist acrylic paintings and organic ceramic sculptures of
sensual female forms embodied in trees along the Susquehanna River. The
forms symbolize “the endurance and courage of women in the face of the
ordeals” they experience. Desabres found a resemblance between women’s
wounds and scars and those found on trees, whose trunks and branches echo
the shapes of women’s torsos, arms, and legs.
Having found that trees are “stoical, enduring companions” to women,
Desabres says her work “is a personal and realistic observation and is
meant as a celebration of the art of survival and the inner beauty women
achieve in doing so.”
Wounds and Wombs – Paintings and Ceramics by Ré Desabres will be on
display until January 28 at the Center for Women’s Creative Expression,
1507 North Third Street, Harribsurg. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on
Saturdays, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays, and by appointment. For more
information, call 238-6244.
Jazz Mandolin Project
November 18
Harrisburg Area Community College
The
Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community College will become
the center stage for musical improvisation and experimentation on Sunday,
November 18 when The Jazz Mandolin Project performs. Known for using the
mandolin in previously untapped capacities, the band’s crossbreeding of
jam and jazz has earned the Vermont-based JMP a loyal, national following.
Of course, it helps that Phish drummer Jon Fishman often takes over drum
duties for the band and an earlier incarnation of the group also included
Phish frontman Trey Anastasio.
The Rose Lehrman Arts Center is located on the campus of the Harrisburg
Area Community College. For tickets and information, call 231-ROSE. |
