| The Rose Tattoo Through October 28 Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Alvina Krause Theatre, Bloomsburg 800-282-0283 bte.org A
classic from the pen of renowned playwright Tennessee Williams, The Rose
Tattoo is Williams’ only major work with a happy ending. Set on the Gulf
Coast, The Rose Tattoo tells the life of Serafina, a Sicilian-born
seamstress who, for all purposes, stops living when her husband is killed
in a work-related accident. Forced to face the increasing maturity of her
daughter, Rosa, Serafina reawakens to the world — defending her daughter,
searching for her place in life, and finding and falling in love.Described by Williams as his “love-play to the world,” The Rose Tattoo will play at the Alivna Krause Theatre in Bloomsburg through October 28. Stage of Harrisburg begins its fall season with The Laramie Project, a
“moving and provocative examination” of a town coping with the senseless
killing of one of its own and the notoriety it brings. Written by Moises
Kaufman, The Laramie Project reflects the aftermath of the death of
Matthew Shepard, the openly gay University of Wyoming student who was
brutally murdered in 1998. Named “a pioneering work of theatrical
reportage and a powerful stage event” by Time Magazine, The Laramie
Project was developed over the course of a year, during which Kaufman and
others made six trips to Laramie, Wyoming, and documented more than 200
interviews. Along with court records and personal journals, those
interviews are the basis for the play. The Laramie Project opened off-Broadway in May of 2000 and will be at Open Stage of Harrisburg through November 4. Poe Evermore October 26-November 11 Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Mt. Hope Estate and Winery, Cornwall 665-7021 x. 231 parenfaire.com The
12th season of the Edgar Allan Poe Evermore festival begins October 26 at
the Mount Hope Estate and Winery in Cornwall. Home of the Pennsylvania
Renaissance Faire, the Victorian Mount Hope Mansion is a fitting locale
for a trip back in time to 1848 and a party of distinguished guests,
including Frankenstein author Mary Shelley and Treasure Island author
Robert Louis Stevenson. The occasion? Poe needs support for his new
literary magazine, The Stylus. To do so, he brings his peers to the
estate, provides entertainment and wine, and, in the process, introduces
intimate theaters in the mansion rooms where some of his best works are
brought to life, including “The Telltale Heart,” “Fall of the House of
Usher,” and “The Raven.” Poe Evermore run through November 11.The Wizard of Oz November 2-4, 7-11, 16-18 York Little Theatre, York 854-5715 ylt.org/index.html Frank
L. Baum’s classic tale of a girl, a tornado, and a cast of memorable
friends comes to life at York Little Theatre during the month of November.
In its 101-year existence, the tale of Dorothy’s journey to the land of Oz
has become one of the most beloved musicals, thanks in large part to the
1939 film starring Judy Garland. With music and lyrics taken directly from
the MGM Motion Picture Score, York Little Theatre’s production of The
Wizard of Oz is sure to become an audience favorite. Watch as Dorothy
finds her way “home” with the help of the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow,
the Tin Man — and Toto! The Wizard of Oz will play through November 18.The Music Man November 13-18 Hershey Theatre, Hershey 534-3405 hersheytheatre.com Based
on the story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey, The Music Man tells
the tale of conman “Professor” Harold Hill. In efforts to pull off a scam
selling musical instruments to the residents of River City, Iowa, Hill
convinces the town he can teach their children to play in a marching band
— though things don’t go quite as planned! The Music Man opened on Broadway in December of 1957, and ran for more than 1300 performances. It is the winner of eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical), a Grammy Award and was the premise for the 1962 film version starring Shirley Jones, for which the soundtrack (with familiar songs like “Seventy Six Trombones” and “Till There Was You”) won an Academy Award. The Music Man will take to the Hershey Theatre stage for eight performances beginning November 13. |
