Kipona
Riverfront Park, Harrisburg
September 1-3
Translated
literally as “sparkling waters,” Kipona has come to mean a number of
things to area citizens and hundreds of thousands of visitors, as the
annual September event symbolizes the close of summer and the offering of
a number of artisans, food, and activities.
As in the past, Kipona will once again play host to, among other things,
the annual Chili Bowl Cook-Off, the Breath of Nature Karate Tournament,
the City Island Volley Ball Tournament, the Funtastik Footbag Tournament,

Presented by the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council, Labor Day 2001 marks the
34th year the Kipona ArtFest will be held in Riverfront Park. The event
will welcome over 150 juried fine artists and craftsmen, offering a
variety of goods, ranging from wood and glass works to fabric pieces,
pottery, and paintings.
Kipona will also feature hours upon hours of live music and entertainment

Exhibition: Heeseung Lee: Recent
Work
Rose Lehrman Arts Center, Harrisburg Area Community College
September 4
An exhibition of recent pottery by the Philadelphia-based artist
Heeseung Lee will be on display at Harrisburg Area Community College’s
Rose Lehrman Arts Center through October 4.
A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Lee has exhibited in
a number of galleries across the United States, including St. Joseph’s
University in Philadelphia and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art.
Lee will conduct a demonstration in HACC’s ceramics studio upon the
exhibition’s close on October 4. The demonstration will highlight the
artist’s unique approach to working with the surfaces of her pottery,
aspects of which include slipwork, carving, photocopy transfers, and
glazing, causing her works to be both “functional and aesthetic.”
“I am interested in creating functional objects that are valued before
physical handling and implementation,” she said. “I think of my pottery as
objects that can be viewed from all angles. Surface treatment and form are
equally as important as the usefulness of my pottery.”
Heeseung Lee: Recent Work will be on exhibit at the Rose Lehrman Arts
Gallery on the campus of the Harrisburg Area Community College from
September 4 through October 4. The free demonstration will take place
October 4 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; registration is required. A lecture and
slide presentation will take place October 4 at 4 p.m. in Whitaker Hall,
Room 214. For more information, call
