Metro Arts Adds to Steelton’s
Revitalization
Metro Arts of the Capital Region recently donated 16 benches
and eight picnic tables for use at Steelton’s new public access boat dock
as part of the Borough’s riverfront revitalization project.
“It is very exciting to have the MetroArts of the Capital Region involved
in the Borough’s Riverfront Revitalization Project,” said Steelton Mayor
George Hartwick.
“The benches and picnic tables will have multicultural pictures or up to
three flags from different cultures on each of them and will be perfect to
go along with “Our Many Countries One People” banners we have throughout
town.”
“The Borough of Steelton is honored that MetroArts has selected Steelton
as the community to do this project for,” continued Hartwick.
Morrow Diamonds Contributes to
Central PA Food Bank
Morrow Diamonds made a $310 donation to the Central
Pennsylvania Food Bank to aid with hunger relief efforts. The business
provides free battery and installation for watches in exchange for a
suggested donation to local charity.
The program has been a success, raising a total of $850 for the cause.
Co-owner Jill Morrow said, “Nearly 100 percent of our customers
participate in this program. They have been extremely generous.” A minimum
donation of $5 is encouraged.
Small Watershed Grant Recipients Announced
Fifty-nine community-led organizations got a portion of the
$1.5 million doled out by Chesapeake Bay Program Small Watershed Grants.
The program supports communities in developing and implementing watershed
management plans, and programs that improve water quality and restore
important habitats within the Chesapeake Bay basin.
Local Organization Selected as
National Volunteers of the Day
Positive Opportunities Inc. of Harrisburg was selected as the
Daily Point of Light for Friday, August 10. The organization, founded by
Frank Pizzoli in 1997, provides HIV-related employment training, technical
assistance, program development, and client services to individuals and
agencies.
Millersville Center
for Economic Education Honored
Millersville University’s Center for Economic Education (MUCEE)
received full five-year affiliation from the National Council on Economic
Education. By giving the center this title, the organization acknowledges
MUCEE’s ability to provide quality economic education that promotes
economic literacy and raises public awareness of the need for economic
education.
Strand-Capital Board of Directors
Elects President
Tim Ruth was elected president of the Strand-Capital Performing
Arts Center’s Board of Directors. Ruth is a local attorney; his involvment
with the Strand dates back to 1985. Jan Herrold will serve as vice
president.
Lupus Foundation Gets Funding
The Pennsylvania General Assembly approved $100,000 in funding
for programs helping lupus patients. The appropriation will help the Lupus
Foundation, Harrisburg branch fulfill their mission to help lupus patients
in 18 Central Pennsylvania counties. The group plans to use the money to
fund the expansion of educational seminars, outreach programs, and support
groups. They also hope to establish new programs in counties throughout
the state.
HYP Test Market for TV Show
Billed as the first indie TV show, “Quarter Life” will be test
marketed on the Harrisburg Young Professionals. The half-hour drama
explores the life choices facing young adults in their mid-to-late 20’s.
August 15, members of the organization will view the pilot episode,
followed by a moderated discussion with the New York City filmmakers and
cast. The show is based on the trendy “The Blair Witch Project” and “The
Anniversary” style of film, which keeps the show’s budget at a slim
$14,000 and episode. Dramas such as “Ally McBeal” can $1.2 million an
episode.
