New Under the Radar CD
To Benefit Gift of Music Program

by Lisa Hummel

Since its debut on 105.7 the X this spring, Under the Radar has become a hotbed for local and regional musical talent, providing a forum for area musicians to hear their tunes on the air. And as if that wasn’t enough, the producers of the Sunday evening show have decided to take their idea one step further and compile an Under the Radar benefit CD. Filled entirely with local and regional artists, proceeds from the disc will directly benefit The Gift of Music, a non-profit program spearheaded by MetroArts of Harrisburg.

The first of its kind for the station, The X Under the Radar disc is slated for a mid-summer release. At press time, the submissions — more than 40 entries — were still being considered. When finished, the CD will boast 12-16 tracks and will offer a unique blend of the sounds familiar to fans of both the local music scene and the Under the Radar program. “We’re very excited about the project,” said Under the Radar host and X Program Director Claudine DeLorenzo. “With the success of the show we thought that we would take things to the next level and benefit a good cause.”

With a mission to collect, restore, and distribute band and orchestra instruments to students unable to afford them, The Gift of Music program is one close to all involved, from the radio station to MetroArts director and local music producer Bob Welsh. “That CD represents the two things that Claudine and The X have an extraordinary energy for, and that is regional music and drawing attention to unsigned bands; the other thing is their real dedication to this Gift of Music program. The fact that they were able to put the two together is tremendous for all involved,” said Welsh. “Simply by doing this CD, The X is drawing attention to all of the great music out there that is under-appreciated and by putting it together to benefit the Gift of Music they’re bringing attention to the program which is going to help broaden kids’ education in general, not only just learn about music, but learn how to learn.”

“One of the best things that music can do is teach young people the learning process that transfers into every other phase of life,” continued Welsh. “And the fact that rock and roll is helping to facilitate that to me is a scream.”

Sponsored by Battlefield Harley Davidson Buell and AT&T Wireless, The X Under the Radar benefit CD will be available for purchase at a cost of $10. For more details and information, visit 1057thex.com.

Under the Radar can be heard on 105.7 the X Sunday nights at 10:30 p.m.
