“For the Lover in You” Valentine’s Day Show

The 6th Annual “For the Lover in You” Valentine’s Day Weekend show will be held at the I.W. Abel Hall in Steelton on February 17. The evening will include a wide variety of entertainment, from comedy to music and dancing. In addition to a live performance by the Philadelphia-based vocal group Page Five, “For the Lover in You” will also feature comedians “The Lovely Angel” and “Joe from Miami,” as well as disco and dance music.

Advance tickets are $20 each and $35 a couple; price includes open bar, free beer, and a cash kitchen. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the show begins at 8 p.m.

The I.W. Abel Hall is located at 200 Gibson Street in Steelton.

Film: The Princess Bride
Capitol Theatre, York
February 17 and 18
Take an evil king, some swords, a giant, and a beautiful and charming princess and what do you have? Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. A fine blend of fairy tale, romance, adventure, action, and comedy, the film has been wowing audiences since its 1987 release. The Princess Bride tells the story of the kidnapped Buttercup, played by Robin Wright, and the trials and travails that unfold when as her one true love tries to rescue her from a forced marriage with the “odious” Prince Humperdinck, played by Chris Sarandon. The film is complete with swashbuckling, comedic shtick, and a few surprises, including a cameo by Billy Crystal.

The Capitol Theatre will show The Princess Bride on February 17 at 8 p.m. and on February 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12.

16th Annual Bluesfest
Chameleon Club, Lancaster
February 17
For the 16th year, the Chameleon Club in Lancaster will be hosting its annual Bluesfest, taking place this year on February 17. The evening will host a line-up of six bands, with the entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Memphis-based teen guitar phenom Zach Myers. The night will also include performances by Clarence Spady, the Larry Baeder Group, Tom Principato, the Slam Allen Band, and piano virtuoso Henry Butler from New Orleans.

Concert: Stefon Harris
Harrisburg Hilton and Towers

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris is the next act to take the stage as part of the Central PA Friends of Jazz (CPFJ) monthly jazz concert series. With a technique described as “untouchable” by The New York Times and a career that has earned him the title of one of the “most important young artists in jazz” by The Los Angeles Times, Harris is a force to be reckoned with in the jazz world.

Harris is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, with a B.A. in Classical Music and an M.A. in Jazz Performance. And, at 26, he has already earned a slew of honors, including Debut Artist of the Year by Jazz Times and Chicago Tribune’s Debut of the Year. Harris has released two albums, 1998’s A Cloud of Red Dust and 1999’s Black Action Figure.

Stefon Harris and his quartet will be at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers on February 18 at 6 p.m. The Boiling Springs High Scholl Jazz Band will begin the performance at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 for members of the CPFJ; $9 for student members of the CPFJ; $15 for general admission; $9 for student general admission; and children under 12 are free. Tickets can be purchased by calling 540-1010 or at the door on the day of the event.

Concert: Patricia Barber
Theatre of Living Arts, Philadelphia
February 17
Acclaimed vocalist, pianist, and composer Patricia Barber will be at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia on February 17. Touring in support of her latest album, nightclub, Barber will be marking her return to the area; she last played in Philadelphia in 1998.

Called “a beat musician and a bop intellectual” by the New York Times, Barber has been compared to such singers as Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and Cassandra Wilson. 

Her first album of standards, nightclub highlight Barber singing such songs as “Bye Bye Blackbird,” which has earned her rave reviews. “Barber’s hushed, sensuous version of Bye Bye Blackbird hasn’t been bettered since Miles Davis last took the old standby out for a spin,” said Terery Teachout of Time.

Cabaret
Mathers Theatre, 
Dickinson College, Carlisle
February 23-24 and 26-27
“Cabaret” is coming to Carlisle. The Theatre and Dance and Music departments of Dickinson College are performing the legendary music that is once again turning heads on Broadway.

Based on “The Berlin Stories” by Christopher Isherwood, “Cabaret” tells the story of Cliff Bradshaw, an American writer in Berlin during the Hitler era and the incidents that occur as he attempts to pen a novel. Bradshaw finds himself drawn into the “denizens” of the Kit Kat Klub and soon realizes the affects of Nazism on those around him.

In addition to the title song, the production features a number of familiar tunes, including “Maybe This Time” and “Don’t Tell Mama.”

“Cabaret” will be at Mathers Theatre in the Holland Union Building at Dickinson College in Carlisle on February 23-24 and 26-27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 245-1327.

Mardi Gras Happy Hour and a Half
Dauphin County Bar Association, Harrisburg
February 27
The Dauphin County Bar Association and the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg are hosting a “Mardi Gras Happy Hour and a Half” on February 27 at the second floor of the Association’s Front Street building. 

The event begins at 6 p.m., renowned local comedienne Karen Gray will take the ‘stage’ at 7:30 p.m. Gray will be on-hand to perform her one-woman show, “Swirlies,” a dramedy based on the comic’s Catholic-Jewish upbringing. Cajun Creole Hor d’oeuvres will be prepared by Chef Raymond Miller, formerly of Flamin’ Raymond’s.

Tickets for the event are $95 and can be purchased by calling 234-7931. All proceeds will benefit the YWCA Domestic Violence Legal Clinic. The Dauphin County Bar Association is located at 213 North Front Street, Harrisburg.

Scott’s Grill on Locust Street in Harrisburg will be providing a 10% discount to those who would like to have dinner after the event.
