Exhibit: Possible Futures: Science Fiction Art from the Frank Collection
Susquehanna Art Museum, Harrisburg
Opening Reception January 18
The Susquehanna Art Museum welcomes the fourth major exhibit to come to its new facility, Possible Futures: Science Fiction Art from the Frank Collection. Organized by the University of Maryland, the traveling exhibit consists of major pieces from the collection of Howard and Jane Frank, two of the country’s primary collectors of the science fiction genre, which they began 35 years ago. The collection now includes the works of such artists as James Gurney and James Warhola, the nephew of Andy Warhol.

Self-described, "art groupies," Howard and Jane Frank buy the paintings simply because they like them. "We don’t buy them because of who painted them, because of the books or stories they illustrate, or because critics, art experts or other collectors speak of them favorably," said Howard Frank. "So, in one sense, we can explain the acquisition of all our paintings in a simple way. But love can only explain the rationale for collecting, not the process."

Featuring approximately 45 works, the exhibit will be at The Susquehanna Art Museum through March, 2001. Accompanying the main exhibition is Pop Mechanics, which will examine contemporary kinetic artwork and the growing relationship between science, fiction, and visual art.

The Opening Reception for Possible Futures: Science Fiction Art from the Frank Collection will take place January 18 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The Susquehanna Art Museum is located in the Kunkel Building at 301 Market Street, Harrisburg.
