| Letters/Commentary Central PA Voices Their Thoughts and Opinions The people of the United States need to look at the whole picture here. We had approximately 15,000 votes in 1996 disqualified as invalid and now 20,000 more in 2000 in the same precinct. There is something wrong with this picture. Shame on America, that in this day of knowledge and high technology we are disqualifying votes in such mass quantities. And then minimize such an act and not be bothered or concerned, about it, this is inexcusable. Yes, it is conceivable that one’s vote can be cast incorrectly due to human and technical error, but to have one’s vote not count for something is not Democratic. We day in a Democracy vote, vote, vote, your vote matters. Yet in the same sense we don’t provide a full proof way to make every vote valid, this is Hypocritcal. We have an obligation to make sure that every person’s right to vote is upheld through all means necessary. Whether it be through knowledge, understanding and or providing a full proof way of making sure each vote be valid. Remember this is America. This is a Democracy and the voice of the people matters whether we like it or not. No one person should be disenfranchised. The matter of depriving a person of one of their most sacred rights, the right to vote, by making that vote invalid must be addressed in the courts. All things must be considered in this most delicate matter, such as basic human rights, state rights, and voter’s intent. I am sure this event will forever change the way we look at the voting system in the United States. We should not wane or become weary in trying to do the right thing by the people, for the people, of the United States. Remember that Democracy has always come with a high price. Invest time and wisdom so we obtain fair and equitable justice in this most serious matter. —R. Haywood |
