AIDS Benefit Concert featuring Jill Sobule

by Lisa Hummel

Five years and two albums later, Jill Sobule still brings visions of one song: "I Kissed A Girl," a track off her self-titled 1995 sophomore effort that was the break-through hit from the singer-songwriter. A controversial single that drew its fair share of attention with its catchy melody and homoerotic lyrics, "I Kissed A Girl" was the first of its theme to break into mainstream pop, finding great success and causing some southern radio stations to ban its airplay. And, in 1996, Sobule was honored at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards with the Outstanding Song Award.

According to Sobule, however, the buzz surrounding the song was unexpected. "I didn’t expect all the attention for ‘I Kissed A Girl,’" she said in a recent published interview, "On the pro side, I think it was a good song. I’ve had people come up to me and say it really meant something to them. It was one of the first songs to go Top 40 and have that type of content. As a songwriter, I wanted the audience to know me for the full body of work I’ve written and not just this one song."

Having earned rave reviews for what Interview magazine cited as the way she — and her music — gets "under the skin of everyday life and pulls out the real sparks," Sobule has recorded songs for a number of soundtracks, including Clueless and The Truth About Cats and Dogs, and was a past recipient of Esquire’s annual "Women We Love Issue".

Touring in support of her latest release, Pink Pearl, Sobule — with her entire catalogue of material — will be performing an acoustic benefit concert at the Chameleon Club on December 1, World AIDS Day. Proceeds from the benefit will go to AIDS Community Alliance (ACA) and will directly benefit clients and prevention services.

"December 1 is World AIDS Day and ACA wanted to both remember those individuals who have passed and those individuals living with AIDS," said Phil Goropoulos, Executive Director of ACA.

And, while some significant strides have been taken in the fight against the disease, including news of research recently released at the 13th International Conference on AIDS, Goropoulos emphasizes that the fight is far from over. "Contrary to headlines, AIDS has not been cured. And although the new drugs make the disease manageable in some ways, the new drugs cannot be taken for a lifetime," he said. "We must remember that the new drugs do not help about half of the individuals who are infected."

The benefit concert at the Chameleon Club will take place December 1 at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Opening for Jill Sobule is local band, Wondercrush, who will take the stage until 8:15 p.m.

General admission tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. A limited pre-concert "Meet the Artist" VIP reception will be held, with Sobule signing autographs. Tickets are $40. For tickets and information, call ACA at 1-800-867-1550 or the Chameleon Club at 393-7133.

The Chameleon Club is located at 223 North Water Street, Lancaster.
