Ice Breaker at the New Giant Center

The erection of the Giant Center, the new state-of-the-art arena at the Hersheypark complex, was kicked off on November 8 with various area notables in hard hats tossing shovelfuls of ice to represent the ice rink that will house the Hershey Bears minor league hockey team. Being built to replace the 64-year old Hersheypark Arena, the 300,000-sq ft Center is located on 56 acres of undeveloped land southwest of the intersection of Hersheypark Drive and Park Boulevard.

Among the attendants at the ceremony were Scott Newkam, CEO-Hershey Entertainment; Tony Schiano, Chairman-Giant Foods; and newly-re-elected senator, Jeff Piccola-R, who said that it was "truly an exciting day for Dauphin County and Central PA." Echoed Schiano, "We believe that we’re participating in an important part of the Hershey community."

In addition to serving as the home of the Hershey Bears, The Giant Center will also host a variety of other events, ranging from concerts and wrestling events to family and ice shows, much like Hersheypark Arena does now.

Among the modern amenities that the Giant Center will offer are 40 luxury suites, half of which have already been purchased. The suites will offer "optimum viewing," 13 fixed seats, four bar stool seats, two television monitors, a VCR, refrigerator, wet bar, and phone service, among other things. With 20 months to go before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the remaining suites are expected to sell out before the Grand Opening.

The Giant Center is slated to open mid-2002.
