Marat/Sade
Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown
November 10, 11, 17, 18
A production of Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade (or The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade) will be taking the Alumni Theatre stage at Elizabethtown College November 10, 11, 17, and 18.

A complex production, Marat/Sade was written as a play within a play, with inmates of the Asylum of Charenton, under Sade’s direction, reenacting scenes from the French Revolution and the assassination of Marat by Charlotte Corday. And while Sade’s play takes place in 1808 — some 15 years after Marat’s death — it introduces political grievances of the time that drive the inmates to irrationality apart from their roles in the production. Throughout the performance, Sade challenges the character of Marat to political and philosophical arguments, a move that prods the chaos within the asylum, much to the dismay of the asylum’s director who comes to see the play with his family.

Marat/Sade has been honored with both a Tony Award and the New York Critics Award for Best Play.

Directed by Terri Mastrobuono, Marat/Sade will be at the Alumni Theatre stage at Elizabethtown College November 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. To reserve tickets, call the Elizabethtown College theatre box office at 361-1170. Due to mature content, the production is not recommended for younger audiences.

Concert: George Winston
Zembo Temple, Harrisburg
November 14
Grammy Award winning pianist George Winston will be performing at the Zembo Shrine Auditorium on November 14 at 7:30 p.m. Winston’s first Harrisburg performance in 10 years, the concert will cover the entire spectrum of his 25-year recording career, with selections from his debut effort, Ballads and Blues, to his most recent release, Plains.

A self-described "rural folk piano" player, Winston has had a full career, releasing some eight albums including 1996’s Linus & Lucy: The Music of Vince Guaraldi, a tribute to one of his greatest influences. He has also recorded solo piano and solo guitar soundtracks for children’s animated videos, including The Velveteen Rabbit and Pumpkin Circle.

In addition to his mastery at the piano, Winston also plays guitar. In 1985, Winston began recording Hawaiian slack key guitar masters — including Keola Beamer and Led Kaapana, among many others — a series now totaling over 25 releases. The name for the ‘venerable finger-picked guitar tradition began in Hawaii in the early 1800s’, slack key guitar playing has greatly influenced Winston’s own work; he plans on eventually recording a solo slack key guitar album of his own.

George Winston will be performing at the Zembo Shrine Auditorium on November 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $25 and are available by calling the box office at 909-4388.

Inspired by Manilow’s hit song of the same name, the musical is "a tale of love and romance set at the heart of the swinging nightclub scene of the 1940s." Copacabana focuses on an aspiring songwriter, Stephen and his dream, which features hopeful showgirl, Lola Lamar, and tells of the trials and tribulations that result on her path to stardom.

Exhibit: Jane Piper and Her Circle:
Three Generations of Painters in Philadelphia
State Museum of PA, Harrisburg
Through January 14
Opening Reception: November 19
An exhibition honoring one of Philadelphia’s finest painters will be on display at the State Museum in Harrisburg from November 19 through January 14.

Featuring more than 125 paintings and works on paper, the exhibit, "Jane Piper and Her Circle: Three Generations of Painters in Philadelphia," includes works not only done by Piper, but her teachers, colleagues, and students, as well. These extra works — on display with the traveling exhibit only during their stop at the State Museum — together form the first exhibition to examine Piper’s growth and development as a painter, both in comparison to her peers and her protégées.

Among others, the exhibit will feature the works of Piper’s mentor, Philadelphia modernist painter Arthur B. Carles. In addition to sketches, etches, still life paintings, and other works of art, the exhibit will also include documentary materials, photographs, and memorabilia. A 12-minute video, Quita Broadhead: Reflections of Arthur B. Carles, will be shown in the galleries. Philadelphia artist and former Piper protégée Bill Scott will serve as the exhibition’s guest curator.

"Jane Piper and Her Circle: Three Generations of Painters in Philadelphia" will be on display at the State Museum through January 14, 2001. The opening reception will be held November 19. General admission to the Museum is free.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania is located at 300 North Third Street, Harrisburg.

Spur of the Moment
Sheraton Inn East
November 22
Spur of the Moment is bringing their unique blend of jazz and R&B to Harrisburg, playing at the Sheraton Inn East on November 22. Playing together for the last decade, the six-man band has a successful ‘extraordinary, sultry’ sound that has found them opening for such acts as jazz and R&B legends Gladys Knight and Boney James, among others and has led to the recording of two discs, Spur Addict and Out of the Shadows.

"The music of Spur of the Moment is a melting pot of individual attitudes, ideas, styles, and interpretations," says keyboardist/vocalist Kenny Allen. "We feel our unique blend is what appeals to the universal audience."

Performing hits of their own and works of some of today’s artists, Spur of the Moment’s live show integrates several styles of music, with influences ranging from Earth, Wind, and Fire to Fourplay.

Spur of the Moment will be at the Sheraton Inn East on November 22. Also featured in the show will be local artist Diane Wilson, and musicians Rick Ranaglia, the Stevenson Twins, and Gary Waters. Show time is 8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m. For tickets and information, call 233-4236.
