Fuel: Latenight At MediaPlay
Celebrating the release of Something Like human in fine fashion

by Lisa Hummel

Where were you September 18 at midnight? If your answer has anything remotely to do with re-runs of Letterman or Leno or counting sheep, then you don’t know what you missed. While you were tucked away in your house, some 2,000 of your friends and neighbors were crammed inside Harrisburg’s Media Play to catch an opportunity to see and hear Fuel. The occasion? The midnight release of Something Like Human, the second national effort from the Harrisburg-band-made-big.

With fans beginning to line the perimeters of Media Play at 5 p.m. the release party was in full swing by the time the clock struck midnight. All four members of the band — Brett Scallions, lead vocals/guitar; Carl Bell, vocals/guitar; Jeff Abercrombie, bass; and Kevin Miller, drums — on hand, Scallions and Bell took the stage and performed an acoustic set that included a sampling of all things Fuel — the new: "Last Time," the old: "Shimmer," and the classic, as Scallions broke into his rendition of Elton John’s "Daniel," a song first covered for local radio station WQXA (105.7 the X), who sponsored and hosted the event.

And, in addition to the mini-concert, the evening of course included the sale of CDs. More than 1,500 Fuel fans pre-purchased the disc, entitling them to an autograph session with the band following the show.

And while the fans at Media Play were more than excited about the chance to spend the late-night with Fuel in person, they were just as excited to take a listen to the disc. A 12-track effort, Something Like Human has already received great radio airplay with its first single, "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)."

When MODE last spoke to Fuel in August the band had high expectations for the album, the follow-up to 1998’s highly successful Sunburn. "I think this record is even more guitar driven than the first record was, I think it’s heavier for sure," said Scallions. "I think we’ve grown and matured as a band and that’s what you want to do as an artist, as a band, you want to be able to take yourself to that next level and I think we’ve done that on this record."

Fuel is currently on the road, touring in support of Something Like Human.
