Exhibit: The Art of the Portrait September 29 – November 24 Opening Reception: October 1 The Pennsylvania School
of Art and Design in Lancaster is hosting "The Art of the Portrait," an
exhibit of the works of six artists from across the country. A nationally
juried exhibit, "The Art of the Portrait" focuses on portraiture, with
mediums ranging from painting and drawing to sculpture and computer
related imagery.
In conjunction with the exhibit, students at the Pennsylvania School of Art and Design will be concentrating their studies on similar aspects of the art form, as they learn the basics of anatomy and drawing of the human body, according to Kristy Krivitsky, director of the college’s galleries, thus, "the Portrait Show will allow students to see alternative approaches to portraiture." An artist lecture by Susana Viola Jacobson, artist and adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania, will also be given in addition to the exhibit. "The Art of the Portrait" will be in the Pennsylvania School of Art and Design main galleries from September 29 through November 24. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held October 1 from noon – 5 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours during the exhibition are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Call for weekend hours. For more information, check the Pennsylvania School of Art and Design website at psad.edu or call 396-7833.
Pottery Exhibit and Sale October 1 Central Pennsylvania potter Thom Bissey will host an exhibition and sale of his wares on October 1 at Crown Books in Mechanicsburg. Bissey will display pieces that were created in the American raku firing technique, a practice that entails placing hot pots in combustible materials that lead to the distinctive raku patterns. He will also display other styles of ceramic art, including sagger and pit firing, as well as traditional styles. The exhibit will feature more than 150 one-of-a-kind, original pieces that will be available for sale. Thom Bissey’s Pottery Exhibit and Sale will be at the Crown Books store in Mechanicsburg on October 1. For more information, call 432-1034.
Live Music: Adam Marsland October 4 The One Man, One Car, One
Guitar tour is heading this way. The month-long solo venture of Cockeyed
Ghost front-man Adam Marsland will make its stop at Gullifty’s in Camp
Hill on November 4.
On a mission to publicize both the band’s profile and draw attention to their forthcoming CD, Ludlow 6:18, Marsland’s tour will cover 11,000 miles, 31 days, and some 27 shows, spanning the country from Harrisburg to San Diego and points in between. Scheduled for release in February, Ludlow 6:18 is the latest effort of Cockeyed Ghost — the follow-up album to 1999’s critically acclaimed The Scapegoat Factory. And while times are happy now, they haven’t always been. Over the years, Cockeyed Ghost has performed with such acts as Fastball, Third Eye Blind, Redd Kross, and Shonen Knife and has found itself in the midst of turmoil — with the folding of its label and the departure of two founding members, a loss that forced Marsland to pick up the pieces, rebuild, and record Scapegoat and Ludlow with an entirely different line-up. Successfully transformed, Cockeyed Ghost is once again back on its feet, and, sporting an eclectic sound of "pop rock music — melodic, harmony-based rock and roll with enough oomph and intelligent (but not pretentious) lyricism to keep yawns away" — the band has often been compared to artists ranging from Brian Wilson and Husker Du to Elvis Costello and Ben Folds Five. Opening for Adam Marsland will be local favorites Case 150 and Wayne Supergenius. The show begins at 9:15 p.m. Concert: Alison Brown October 6 One of music’s most
highly touted banjo players will be taking the Whitaker Center stage on
October 6. Called a "genre bending banjoist," Alison Brown has released
six albums — the last two, Out of the Blue and this year’s Fair
Weather, on her own Compass Records — was a member of Alison Krauss’
band Union Station, and a band leader for Michelle Shocked. Credited for
taking the banjo to new heights, out of the traditional ‘Appalachian’
sounds and into a new style, a mix of bluegrass and "jazz-hued" acoustic
music, Brown has received nothing but rave reviews during her career,
earning a Grammy nomination for her 1990 debut solo effort, Simple
Pleasures.
Alison Brown will be at the Whitaker Center on October 6 at 8 p.m. For tickets and information, call 214-ARTS.

Admission to the Bash is $10 in advance and for HYP and Susquehanna Art Museum members or $12 at the door.
