| Cheap Lunch With Betty One Woman's Relentless Search For Great Lunches Subs Unlimited Plus / Tailgaters Saint Charles Plaza York, PA Boy, did I have a great cheap lunch at a place called Subs Unlimited Plus. It’s a very unobtrusive place from the outside, but inside it’s spacious with tables and booths, a long wall of windows, a packed little game room, and a lot of charm, not to mention some grrrrrreat food.
The lunch specials, which change daily, run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and include a soda of your choice. Of the seven choices that day, the Cup of Soup and Steak Sandwich ($4.95), the 8" Ranch Pizza ($3.95), and the small Italian Sub with Small Fries ($5.25) topped my pick list. But, because we were a little hungrier than usual, my guest and I ordered right off the menu, selecting the 14" Sausage Boli and a Large Italian Sub. My guest’s boli was made from scratch, including the dough. The Italian sausage was sweet and aromatic, the mozzarella cheese abundant, and the onions and green peppers fresh and flavorful. It came served on a pizza pedestal and probably weighed in at two or three pounds. My Italian Sub was overflowing, yet perfectly satisfying. Made with those great soft sub rolls you can only get from a local family bakery, this was my dream sub. Laden with cooked ham, Italian ham, hard salami, and provolone cheese, it wasn’t slathered with mayo or dripping oil and vinegar (which Betty really hates). It was topped with just the right amount of shredded lettuce, some chopped onions and a few tomatoes … and it was gone in 60 seconds. Our beverages were a diet soda and an iced tea, and believe it or not, Betty is trying to lose a few pounds, so for this lunch I refrained from selecting one of Subs Unlimited Plus’ delicious deserts. Believe me, a little homemade Black Forest Cheese Cake never hurt anyone, but I’m falling out of my support hose, so next time. There’s a lot more to Subs Unlimited Plus’ menu than the few items we toyed around with. I was dying to try their wings, available in Buffalo or BBQ. They had all kinds of salads, from tossed to anti pasta with a chef or a fajita chicken thrown in. And, of course, they make a killer burger, too. My only wonder about Subs Unlimited Plus, open since 1975 with their great food, was how they came to be where they were. Well, they’re actually connected to Tailgater’s, which is one of York’s hottest nightspots with a great deck and nothing but a non-stop party. So, if you’re going out at night you can expect the same great meal as you would if you sat down next door. Both are located in the Saint Charles Plaza on Saint Charles Way just off Queen Street (the 6E exit of I-83) in York.
