Exhibits: Project/Reflect
and Minding Glass
Susquehanna Art Museum,
Harrisburg
Now through September 30

Two major exhibits featuring works in glass will be on display at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg until September 30. Robin Stanaway: Project/Reflect will be held in the main galleries and Minding Glass will be exhibited in the Project Room on the second floor.

Robin Stanaway: Project/Reflect is a collection of works from the artist who uses both glass and water to explore the properties of light, optics, and sound. A ‘retrospective of her work,’ the exhibit will include two room-size installations, smaller glass installations, film, and works on paper.

The Minding Glass exhibit will include the works of eight internationally known contemporary artists — including Nancy Bowen and Christopher Wilmarth — who use glass as a sculptural and conceptual medium.

In addition to the glass exhibitions, various works will also be featured in the public areas of the museum. These exhibits include the works of Deborah Sigel, John Ebeling, John Monteith, and Ryan Humpfrey.

The exhibits will be on display now through September 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and by appointment.

Second Annual Hempt Polo Cup
Hempt Field, Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg
August 19
Held to benefit the Harrisburg Opera Association, the 2nd Annual Hempt Polo Cup will be played on August 19, in a game that will pit the West Shore Polo Club team against the Lancaster Polo Club.

Akin to ‘hockey on horseback,’ polo is played by teams of four mounted players, with the goal to hit a 3 ½" diameter ball between the uprights at each end of the field with a 4 ½’ foot long mallet — while at a speed of 20-35 miles per hour. And, like hockey, the game also requires quick defensive skills, including hooking, bumping, and ‘riding off,’ which is simply to push a player’s horse off the line of the ball.

In addition to the polo match, there will also be a display of cars courtesy of the Rolls Royce Society of America, and driving and musical dressage exhibitions by the Pennsylvania Paint Horse Club.

Gates at the Hempt Polo Field, which is located on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg, opposite Cumberland Valley High School, will open at 1 p.m.; the match will begin at 3 p.m.

General admission is $5; children under 12 are admitted free. A variety of other admission packages, such as the Preferred Patron and Silver, Gold, and Platinum Sponsorships that include such extras as sideline parking and chairs, are also available.

Corvettes at Carlisle 2000
Carlisle Fairgrounds
August 25-27
If you’re in the mood for a little time travel, then the 2000 edition of Corvettes at Carlisle is the place to be — with a weekend aimed at taking a look into the past and a peak into the future.

Held at the Carlisle Fairgrounds, the show features three levels of field participation for Corvette owners, nearly 2,000 show cars, an all-Corvette auction, seminars, and an all-Corvette car corral.

In addition to the latest efforts of the current most recognized C5 tuners — Callaway, Lingenfelter, Mallett, Nowicki, and Rippie — the show is also slated to display at least five legendary Corvette Concept Cars, four of which come directly from General Motors, including a 1990 Cerv III, a 1972 Reynolds Aluminum Corvette, and a 1967 Astro II, an internal GM project that experimented with mid-engine replacement that has seldom been seen since the 1968 New York Auto Show. The only non-General Motors-owned Corvette is a 1960 Cerv I, which was once clocked at 206 mph.

Corvettes at Carlisle will also feature The Fun Display, a no-pressure, non-judged show field; the Women’s Oasis, a spot with facials, massages, and air conditioning; the swap meet, and much more.

Corvettes at Carlisle 2000 will take place August 25 – 27 at the Carlisle Pennsylvania Fairgrounds. Gates open at 7 a.m. Admission is $7 on Friday and Saturday, $8 on Sunday, and children under 12 are admitted free. Only those driving Corvettes will be able to park on the grounds, which they can do for an additional $4.

Concert: Enon
Yip Roc Records, Lancaster
August 31
You take three veteran musicians and group them together and what do you get? Enon. Comprised of John Schmersal (formerly of Brainiac and John Stuart Mill) and ex-Skeleton Key-ers Rick Lee and Steve Calhoon, the indie-rock group Enon has been creating waves with their sound — a mix of pop-rock and punk-filled noise, complete with hints of electronica, sampling, percussion, and industrial vibes.

Coming off the release of their debut effort, Believo! from the See Thru Broadcasting label, Enon has been receiving the steady airplay of their singles — "Fairly Underground" and "Come Into" — on commercial alternative stations since the album’s March release. The disc is a smattering of funky tunes that are a mix of giddy melodies and bassy blues, complete with quirky lyrics.

Touring in support of their debut release on See Thru Broadcasting, Believo!, the trio Enon has been crossing the country with such acts as Girls Against Boys, Man or Astroman, Luna, Les Savy Fav, and Mogwai.

Slated to share the stage with Starlight Mints, 65 Film Show, and Styles Murphy, Enon has been earning rave reviews for their live show, a gig that has been called "knock-down, shimmy-up, ass-grabbing, and toe-tickling," among other things.

Enon will be at Lancaster’s Yip Roc Records on August 31.
