Celebrate The 14th Annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash

by Lisa Hummel

Taking place in Terra Alta, West Virginia, the 14th Annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash is three nights of music and fun in the spirit of its namesake — complete with camping, two stages, and twenty bands, the weekend festival will feature the music of Leftover Salmon, Stir Fried with Vassar Clements, The Zen Tricksters, Juggling Suns, local favorites The All Mighty Senators, and ekoostik hookah, among others.

Known for their eclectic musical style, ekoostik hookah has spent the past decade cultivating masses of die-hard fans who travel hundreds of miles to hear them play their "lucid, improvisational treatment of psychedelic rock’n’roll, blues, funk, jazz, and bluegrass, layered with rich harmonies."

Since their formation in 1991 the Ohio-based quintet — vocalist/keyboardist Dave Katz, lead guitarist Steve Sweney, bassist Cliff Starbuck, drummer Eric Lanese, and rhythm guitarist Ed McGee — have performed in more than 30 states and major cities, including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco and have released some six CDs — including their most recent, 1999’s Sharp in the Flats — which have sold more than 75,000 copies combined.

In addition, the band has spent the past two summers on stage headlining a feel-good festival of their own, Hookahville, where they have had a ‘Grateful’ encounter of their own — having performed with Grateful Dead alum Bob Weir.

The 14th Annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash will take place July 21 – 23 in Terra Alta, WV at the Sunshine Daydreams Campground. Ticket prices are $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the show; children under 12 are admitted free. Gates open on Friday, July 21, with the music beginning at 5 p.m.
