| Don't Know Where To Volunteer? American Red Cross 1814 N. 6th St. Harrisburg 234-3101 This is the largest humanitarian organization in the United States. The Red Cross depends on volunteers to accomplish the organization’s mission: providing relief to victims of disasters and helping people prepare for, prevent, and respond to emergencies. Red Cross provides training for most volunteer positions.
American Heart Association 730-4080 The Heart Association’s mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Through this organization volunteers do most of the educational presentations and fundraising. They also help in the processing of memorials. American Lung Association 541-5864 Everyday volunteers for the American Lung Association fight lung disease by teaching children how to avoid asthma attacks, educating youngsters about the dangers of tobacco, and raising money for lung disease research. They help smokers break their addiction to nicotine, and work for tougher air quality standards. Aurora Club 232-6675 The Aurora Club reaches out to those who are mentally challenged or mentally handicapped. Volunteers will work in the building playing games and making friendships with the clients, who are ages 21 and up. Big Brother-Big Sister Inc. of the Capital Region 236-0199 This program is made up of caring adults who are mentors to children. People from all backgrounds of life are involved. Volunteers provide friendships, enjoy schoolwork, attend sporting events and other extra curricular activities with the children. Contact Volunteer 652-4987 or (800) 932-4616 Contact helpline is a 24-hour service that helps people anonymously with any problem. If you feel you could help to counsel over the phone, or need help with a problem, contact volunteer is the organization for you. Dauphin County Ctr. for Aging 255-2790 The center for aging is a great program to be involved in. Volunteers dedicate their time to helping older individuals that can’t always help themselves, along with playing games and reminiscing about old memories. Habitat For Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area 545-7299 Habitat for Humanity brings families and communities in need, together with volunteers and resources to build decent affordable housing. Volunteers have a variety of tasks such as helping to build houses to in the struggle to eliminate poverty and to help the less fortunate provide for their families. Hbg. Dance Conservatory 562-4600 A facility for professional dance education dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of dance as a form of art and cultural enrichment. Volunteers will assist with performance preparation, performances, stage crew, set construction and costumes. Holy Spirit Hospital 763-2657 There are a variety of areas in which volunteers work when helping out at Holy Spirit. This program not only connects the volunteers with the patients in the hospital, but has recently started to reach out to the community. Volunteers will greet patients, deliver flowers, work in the medical library, and assist the nurses. Hospice of Central PA 732-1000 Hospice provides care for the dying in their homes. All hospice care is under professional medical supervision, but in addition to providing for the physical comfort of the dying person, hospice provides social and spiritual support for the patient and his or her family. Here is a way to make a big difference in someone’s life. Make A Wish Foundation 1-888-367-8575 This foundation is known for granting wishes to the terminally ill. Volunteers are utilized in three main areas: they meet with families of the terminally ill, assist in granting wishes, and do fundraising and public speaking. My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group (570) 289-4335 This organization is dedicated to helping the homeless. Volunteers will participate in quilt making and then deliver them to the homeless to keep them as warm and comfortable as possible. PA Court Appointed Special Advocate Association 737-7344 Volunteers receive training to serve as an advocate for a child who is in dependency of the court because of abuse or neglect. You will conduct independent assessments of the case, and provide reports and testimonies to the courts so that the judge can make the best possible decision for the child. Salvation Army 233-6755 This organization operates a large social service program. As a volunteer for the Salvation Army you will assist in providing feeding programs for the needy, helping out with counseling, and a variety of other youth and senior programs. Special Olympics 732-6756 The Special Olympics helps mentally challenged individuals find self-fulfillment through sporting events. Volunteers not only help the individuals to compete, they also organize walk-a-thons and fundraisers to help in raising money for these events. Student Conservation Assoc. The SCA provides people with the opportunity to serve and protect national parks, forests, and urban communities. Volunteers provide public service while learning life long lessons in leadership and conservation. With more of a permanent setting, volunteers receive a stipend, travel expenses, and housing. Work lasts anywhere from twelve weeks to twelve months, and may be used toward academic credits. The Volunteer Center 238-6678 If the prior list of volunteer opportunities doesn’t hold what you are looking for, the Volunteer Center is. They play the middle-man in matching a volunteer with an agency. You let them know what you are interested in donating your time for and they will fix you up with the right agency. The Volunteer Center is a program of the United Way of the Capital Region. YWCA 234-7931 110 N. Lime St, Lancaster 393-1735 320 E. Market St, York 845-2631 The YWCA is the oldest and largest women’s membership movement in the United States. The movement’s mission is to empower women and girls and to eliminate racism. These are the guiding principles for all YWCA childcare, domestic violence prevention programs, shelters, fitness centers, and social justice programs.
