| School-New State Law Mayor Stephen R. Reed issued the following statement after the passage of the new state law that recognizes academically distressed school districts in the state: "With the action by the House and Senate today, Pennsylvania has taken an historic and major step toward addressing one of the most vexing issues confronting American society — what to do with failing and unsuccessful schools. "In doing so, the pleas
and cries of many parents and their affected communities have been
heard. "This initiative is the result of the leadership that Governor Tom Ridge has brought to his Nation and this State. By his courage and vision, by his tenacity to tackle the tough issues of our time, he continues to maintain the highest standard for public service and holding government accountable for the taxdollars it spends. "Additionally, particularly for the section of the legislation that specifically applies to Harrisburg, we commend the leadership of Senator Jeffrey Piccola of Dauphin County. Senator Piccola, on a host of matters, has unfailingly gone to extraordinary length to find solutions to longstanding issues. He and Governor Ridge, and Senator Hank Salvatore and all the other sponsors and supporters of the legislation have our thanks. "What Governor Ridge has said by this new law is that as a society and a country, we cannot afford to lose any child … that every child should receive a good education that prepares him or her for the future … so that Pennsylvania and America will have a productive and a just future. We join him in this noble quest, knowing that what we do in the days ahead shall help determine the future of an entire generation … and those yet to be born. "Making this initiative work is now the duty of those who shall have responsibility in the affected districts. It will be a daunting task and there are no simple, overnight solutions … but with this new law, the opportunity for reform and improvement is before us. It is an historic opportunity that deserves the support of parents, teachers, students, and community." |
