Moodroom Pleases Audience at York's Murph's

by Allison Young

The immediate impression stamped by Washington D.C.’s moodroom (sic) is one of concordant discordance. This band brings the elements of lead female vocalist, lead, rhythm and bass guitars, keyboard, and drums together, and whirls them around to produce a tricky pattern of sounds that proves to be pleasingly provocative.

Instantly evident as this band took the stage at Murph’s in York on Thursday, April 20, was the contrast between lead singer Stef Magro’s smooth vocals and the unrestrained energy that resounds within the group’s guitar sounds. The band’s intricate sound is cultivated even further through the addition of deeply penetrating bass lines and a touch of refreshingly subtle electronics provided by keyboardist Jay Hardin. Ultimately the band’s elements come together with an active synergy that showcases their individual musical talents, and the ease with which they break out of the four beat mold proves that they aren’t timid when it comes to presenting their originality. The tricks this band pulls off wouldn’t be possible if these artists weren’t for real.

After the divergent threads of the band’s elements have been deftly interwoven, any residual spaces that may exist in their instrumentals are quickly filled by the flow of Magro’s vocals. Her hauntingly seductive sound lends a mysterious twist to the band as a whole, and is an integral piece of moodroom’s puzzle. Though her vocals are generally tranquil, she is able to reach to the core and bring forth a powerful sound to match the boisterousness of the band’s instrumentals when necessary. Her serene style adds a sophisticated element to the band’s mix.

moodroom brings together diverse elements to fill a genre not otherwise specified. Their musical action is tightly packed with complementary elements that come together to form a unified coherent whole, with Magro’s vocals providing the necessary thread of concordance that ultimately unite the band’s sound. Whether you’re in the mood to dance or simply want to appreciate something different, moodroom is equipped to provide the necessary material. This band’s authenticity is evident, and if moodroom wants it, they certainly possess the energy to get it.
