| Celebrating Cinco de Mayo by Erica Lawrence and MODE To a Mexican, Cinco de Mayo means pride of victory. To Americans, it’s a reminder how an improbable victory over a European power connects the United States with our Latino neighbors. To a Central Pennsylvanian, it’s a good excuse to get out and sample some good ethnic food and culture.
In addition to its importance in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is significant to all Americans because it marks the last time that any foreign power has acted the aggressor on North American soil. In observation of this ever more popular and recognized holiday, a variety of Central PA establishments have planned events at which all age groups and nationalities can enjoy and experience the Cinco de Mayo heritage. Danzante Community Art Center and Studios (200 Chestnut St., Harrisburg) will be presenting their Cinco de Mayo Festival of Cultures and Recital on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., rain or shine. They will be offering (free) everything from live music to face paintings, art displays to ethnic foods. The Danzante Youth Ensemble, which consists of roughly twenty children between the ages of seven and eighteen, will perform percussion and dance. Disc Jockey Sergio Palanco will spin salsa and merengue where the opportunity to experience Latin beats will surely tickle your toes, and notable singer Esmerelda will be making a special appearance to sing some favorite traditional Spanish lullabies. Sierra Madre will be hosting their annual celebration with three days of musical performances from Thursday, May 4 – Saturday, May 6. With two stages to choose from, one inside and one out, this will make for an undeniably good time. The talented Dante will start off the event on Thursday evening with an offering of Spanish music, while well known acoustic performer Ray Solinski will team up with The River’s Glen Hamilton as the show gets underway. The Sots (former members of The Underground Cartoons), will be there to make you want to move your feet, and Kenny Branoff will also be appearing. Sierra Madre will also set up a tent for outside dining, so patrons can enjoy the taste of Mexican food while listening to outside live performances.
Also, on Friday, May 5, Downtown Harrisburg will be joining in on the celebration. This celebration will mark the beginning of "First Fridays," a block party featuring different cultures, and taking place on the first Friday of every month through August. Sponsored by local businesses, Festival Latina will set the stage for a fun summer of promoting awareness of diversities and cultures. Second Street will be closed between Market and Walnut streets for this festive event. If you’re looking for something fun for the whole family, with plenty of activities and entertainment, this is the place to be. Latino bands and Latin dancers will be the highlights, but other offerings include face painting, pinatas, and authentic food. The Harrisburg Hilton and Towers will also have its outdoor patio open for food and beverage services. All activities and entertainment are free. This party runs from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. There are multiple Mexican restaurants in Central PA, and most will be contributing to this celebration with entertainment, discounted beverages, and specialty menu items. Some favorite tortilla munching spots include Mi Mariachi on Market in Lemoyne, Casa Chica and Herby El Mexicano in Steelton, El Rodeo (one on Jonestown Road in Harrisburg and one in York on Loucks), El Serrano on Market in downtown York, and Carlos and Charlie’s in Lancaster on Columbia Avenue. So with a variety of good restaurants and festivals to choose from, you need a better excuse to stay in than to go out and revel. Ole! |
