Concert: Trout Fishing In America
Sunoco Performance Theater
March 18

Named after a Richard Brautigan novel, Trout Fishing in America has spent the last two decades winning audiences over with their unique style of fun-filled, yet “aggressive,” folk music.

Formed in 1979, Trout Fishing in America is the brainchild of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet, who started a band of their own following the break-up of their Houston-based quintet, St. Elmo’s Fire. Since that time, the duo has more than made a name for themselves in the music industry — perhaps becoming best-known for their music targeted towards children. With musical influences ranging from reggae to rock, Idlet and Grimwood have taken it upon themselves to take the ordinary moments in life and make them “extraordinary” — reflecting upon everyday occurrences in the lives of both young children and adults on the nine albums they have recorded in their nearly 20-year career.

Lauded for their “Rare mix of musicianship, humor, and inspiration …” by Billboard Magazine, Trout Fishing in America is one musical performance that shouldn’t be missed.

Trout Fishing in America will be performing at the Whitaker Center’s Sunoco Performance Theater on March 18 at 7p. Tickets are available by calling THE BOX at 214-ARTS.

Ballet Hispanico
Rose Lehrman Arts Center, HACC
March 21

Called an “unfailingly vibrant performance” by The Los Angles Times, one of North America’s leading Hispanic-American dance companies, Ballet Hispanico, is making its way to the area, stopping at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center as part of its current tour.

Under the direction of Tina Ramirez, who founded the group in 1970, the company is known for their versatility, successfully merging traditional dance with modern form, pulling from an eclectic repertoire that includes everything from jazz and merengue to tango and classical ballet.

The performance at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center will feature “Something From Nothing,” a new work choreographed by David Rousseve with music by Latin legend Eddie Palmieri. Set in a “modern-day inner-city Latin Club” the piece reflects the “extraordinary capacity of human beings to make their own joy even when their lives hold pain and sorrow.”

Along with their performance, Ballet Hispanico will take part in a Latin Social Dance workshop sponsored by Harrisburg Area Community College. The March 20 workshop will be held in Danzante Studios, 200 Crescent Street, Harrisburg. No experience is necessary and admission is free, but registration is required. Call 780-2545 to register.

Ballet Hispanico will perform at Harrisburg Area Community College’s Rose Lehrman Arts Center on March 21 at 7:30p. Tickets prices are $23/adults, $16/students and seniors, and are available by calling 231-ROSE or 214-ARTS.

Hubert Sumlin
Chameleon Club
March 22

If you missed the Chameleon Club’s annual Blues Fest last month, then you’ve got one more chance to mend your ways! Snowed out by the last nasty winter storm of the season, blues legend Hubert Sumlin may have been forced to miss the first event, but he is more than ready to take the Chameleon stage on March 22.

Bested by B.B. King for winner of the Best Blues Album in the 2000 Grammys, Sumlin has long been a staple in the blues industry, standing beside the “immortal” Howlin’ Wolf for some 20 years while producing some solo hits of his own. In 1986, he released his first major hit, Hubert Sumlin’s Blues Party, the album that cemented his position as a solo blues artist.

Perhaps more impressive than his discography is the fact that some of the music industry’s biggest guitar legends — from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page — have called Sumlin an inspiration, citing his works as precursors to their own sounds. Sumlin is currently in the studio with Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards working on his latest album.

Hubert Sumlin’s performance at the Chameleon Club will take place on March 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10, and those with ticket stubs to last month’s Blues Fest will receive free admission.
