Show Boat
Hershey Theatre
February 22 – 27

One of the world’s most legendary musicals is making its way to Hershey Theatre. Based on the Edna Ferber novel, Show Boat is set on the Mississippi River in the late 1800s and covers a forty-year period — from the post-reconstruction Deep South to the Roaring Twenties.

Since its stage debut in New York in 1927, the musical has enthralled audiences world wide with the touching story of life on the Cotton Blossom floating theater — with tales ranging from family, love, and the law.

Recipient of five Tony Awards in 1995, including "Best Revival of Musical," the performance features a number of classic songs, including "Ol’ Man River," "Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man," and "Only Make Believe."

The national touring production of Show Boat will be at the Hershey Theatre from February 22 – 27. For more information, call the box office at 534-3405.

Film — U2: Rattle and Hum
Capitol Theatre at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center
February 25

Kicking off the Strand Capitol Theatre’s Rock’n’ Roll Film Series is the 1988 film, U2 Rattle and Hum, a documentary that captures the on and off stage moments of "the world’s most popular rock band" during their acclaimed "Joshua Tree" tour. Directed by Phil Joanou, Rattle and Hum follows lead singer Bono and the band across North America, mixing live concert footage with snippets of the quartet at play.

Formed in 1976, U2 has etched a name for themselves in the annals of rock history, becoming one of the most popular and long-lasting groups of the past few decades. And while their debut foray into the film world was originally met with mixed, if not tepid, reviews, the flick produced a hit double album soundtrack that was divided between live tracks and new material.

U2 Rattle and Hum will play at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in The Capitol Theatre on February 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4 and are available approximately 30 minutes before showtime.

For more information, call 846-1111.

Jane Eyre

One of the world’s greatest romantic stories with a feminist twist is brought to vivid life by Christina Calvit’s imaginative stage adaptation of the beloved Victorian masterpiece.

Victim of an abusive childhood and a traumatic education in a charity school, she finds joy perhaps for the first time in life, falling in love with her handsome, brooding employer Mr. Rochester. But Thornfield Hall houses a dreadful secret that threatens Jane’s happiness and sends her on an arduous journey far from the man she loves.

Jane Eyre runs at the Sunoco Performance Hall at Whitaker Center through March 15. For tickets call 214-ARTS.

Galileo
Theatre of the Seventh Sister, Lancaster
March 2

In the 17th Century, Galileo was purported to have said, "The millennium of faith is ended. This is the millennium of doubt." This Bertolt Brecht play focuses on the tribulations of the scientist and philosopher who was brave enough to challenge the prevailing world view with his empirical proof that Copernicus’ Theory is correct — that the sun and stars do not revolve around man.

Like all of Brecht’s work, this drama is not just a historical account of one period or one man’s experience, but in fact a relevant look at the timeless conflict, here between a new truth and an old myth and the fear generated by such a clash.

Galileo, regarded as one of the Nobel Prize winner’s truly great characters, will be played by New Yorker John Lennartz, last seen at Theatre of the Seventh Sister as Benteen in Custer. Heather Botchlett will play Galileo’s daughter Virginia and Cynthia Charles will appear as the "take-charge" housekeeper, Mrs. Sarti.

Galileo will run through March 25. For more information on this or other Seventh Sister upcoming productions, call 396-7764.
