Glenn Miller Orchestra
Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts
January 27

Although bandleader Glenn Miller disappeared in an airplane crash some fifty-five years ago, the orchestra that bears his name continues to carry his music to the legions of fans who love his big band sound. Formed in 1956 by the Miller Estate as a response to popular demand, the Orchestra has spent the past few decades “on the road” longer and more continuously than any other big band ever, playing to more than 500,000 people at an average of 300 live dates a year. In addition, the 19-member group prides itself on remaining the most sought after big band in the world long after the death of its illustrious leader.

Boasting a play-list of more than 1,700 compositions, the Orchestra plays both newer hits and timeless classics, ranging from Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” to current tunes such as the theme from Star Wars and “Over the Rainbow” from the Wizard of Oz.

Catch the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of musical director Larry O’Brien at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts on January 27 8 p.m. For ticket information, The BOX at 214-ARTS.

The Bacon Brothers
Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center, York
February 2

You know he can act. You know he can dance. But did you know he could sing? On February 2, Kevin Bacon and his brother, Michael, are taking the stage at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in support of their newest CD release, Getting There. While the Bacon Brothers, as the duo is known, have written and played music together for well over twenty years, it has only been three years since they decided to ‘take their show on the road’, a decision that has garnered them critical acclaim for their “eclectic mix of folk, rock, and soul and country” — a musical variation that inspired the acronym-title of their 1997 debut CD, Forosoco.

Compared to everyone from James Taylor to John Cougar Mellencamp, the rootsy, guitar-driven tunes the Brothers play are influenced by the music they grew up listening to in the ’60s and ’70s and are highlighted with the personal storytelling that is evident in many of their songs. On Getting There, the duo wrote all thirteen selections, including, “Ten Years in Mexico,” a song that was influenced by Kevin’s anniversary celebration in Hawaii, and “Don’t Lose Me Boy,” a song that was inspired by a simple comment on the part of Michael’s son.

With the latest release, Kevin and Michael hope to repeat the success of their first go-’round, during which they sold-out concerts across the country and appeared on such television programs as “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Be sure to catch the Bacon Brothers at York’s Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 2 at 8 p.m. For ticket information, call 846-1111.

The Diary of Anne Frank
Open Stage of Harrisburg
February 4 – March 5

Don’t miss the opportunity to catch the riveting real-life tale of a brave young woman who changed the way the world looked at the war — and themselves. Beginning February 4, Open Stage of Harrisburg is presenting “The Diary of Anne Frank,” a theatrical production based upon the wartime journal entries of a thirteen-year-old Anne.

Forced into hiding in Nazi Germany, Anne and her family (mother, Edith; father, Otto; sister, Margot) and some friends spent two years in an annex of her father’s office building, surviving only on the basic necessities and in the harshest of conditions.

Although the experience ended tragically, with the group’s discovery and eventual transportation to concentration camps in 1944, Anne’s words of faith and wisdom outlasted the cruelty and chaos of the war, having become a literary classic and been translated into 55 languages since its discovery and publication in 1947.

Recognizing the importance of this production, Open Stage has developed an extensive education outreach program. Ten School Day matinee performances will be presented to students in the area and a drama residency will be held in the East Pennsboro School District. Four Post-Performance Interactives, panel discussions relating to issues in the play, will be conducted February 13, 20, 27, and March 5. In addition, “The Anne Frank Story,” a traveling exhibit from the Anne Frank Center USA, will be installed in the Capital Area Intermediate Unit from February 28 through March 3. A special program for teachers, “Teaching the Holocaust through The Diary of Anne Frank” will be held February 17 at Open Stage.

For more information about the educational programming or to make reservations, call Open Stage at 232-OPEN.
