The Peabody Trio
Sunoco Performance Theater, Whitaker Center
January 7
Lauded by the New York Times for their “beautifully polished, lush sound …,” The Peabody Trio has spent the past ten years establishing themselves as one of the world’s leading chamber music ensembles.

The resident faculty ensemble of Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory, the trio — Violaine Melancon on violin; Thomas Kraines, cello; Seth Knopp, piano — have been wowing audiences across the nation with their inspiring interpretations of musical works from both modern and classical times.

Since winning the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989, the trio has made serious waves in the chamber music world, performing new music for piano trio and establishing a program that commissions works from contemporary composers.

Market Square Concerts’ production of The Peabody Trio will come to the Whitaker Center’s Sunoco Performance Theater on January 7 at 8 pm. For ticket information, call 214-ARTS.

Jimmie’s Chicken Shack
Chameleon Club
January 8
Annapolis-based band Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is making their way through the midstate again, hitting Lancaster’s Chameleon Club in support of their latest album, Bring Your Own Stereo. The quartet — Jimi Haha on lead vocals and guitar; Che‘ Lemon on bass; Double D (Dave Dowling) on guitar; Mike Sipple on drums — takes the stage at the Chameleon in the midst of receiving national attention and significant airplay of their newest hit single, “Do Right,” which relates the shortcomings of Haha’s relationship with an ex-girlfriend.

Self-described as “mutt rock” — because their style is ‘quite mixed’ — the band’s works have been compared to everyone from the Beach Boys and Offspring to Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chili Peppers and their sound covers the spectrum, mixing a little bit of punk, reggae, folk, ska, and acoustic pop.

Named for the Harlem hang-out of a young, pre-revolutionary Malcolm X, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack’s performance at the Chameleon Club is one you don’t want to miss. The Shack is on their way to becoming a household name — so catch them while you can!

Jimmie’s Chicken Shack will be at Lancaster’s Chameleon Club on January 8 at 7:30 pm.

Girl, Interrupted Screening
Hoyt’s Cinema 14
January 11
Some nine months after leaving the area an unfinished product, Girl, Interrupted is making its way to Pennsylvania again — this time on the big screen.

On January 11, Hoyt’s Cinema will be the site of the advanced screening, a benefit premiere with proceeds being donated to the Mental Health Association of Hampden Township. In addition to the 8 pm screening, the evening’s events also include a reception at the Tyco International Ltd. building located next to Hoyt’s Cinema 14. Tickets can be purchased to attend both the reception and the screening ($125) or just the screening itself ($25).

While no confirmation on the possible attendance of any of the film’s cast or crew had been received at press time, the Pennsylvania Film Office in Harrisburg was quick to point out that no news was not necessarily bad news — rather, that information may not be available until much closer to the date of the event.

Based on the 1994 autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, the movie was directed by James Mangold and stars Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Whoopi Goldberg. Filming began in the area in early January and was completed in April. National release for the film is scheduled for Jan. 14.

The advanced screening of Girl, Interrupted will take place at Hoyt’s Cinema 14 on January 11 at 8 pm. For ticket information, call 796-0601.

ZZ Top and Lynryd Skynyrd
Hersheypark Arena
January 14

How ’bout some old time rock’n’roll to begin the New Year? ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd are taking over the Hersheypark Arena in a show that is sure to highlight their more than 50 years of combined professional experience.

Each together for more than 30 years, both bands have been a staple on the American music front, creating musical selections that exhibit the unique styles that have become distinctive to their works. From ZZ Top’s bluesy funk sound to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s guitar-driven rock and southern blues, the two Hall of Fame groups have been selling out stadiums and producing award-winning records longer than most of today’s hottest acts have even been alive — a fact that, in and of itself, says something about the two bands’ durability and staying power.

For a sample of the sounds that made them famous, catch ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd when they play the Hersheypark Arena on January 14 at 7:30 pm. Ticket availability was limited at press time. For more information, call 534-3911.
