A Review Of The Best Happy Hours In Central PA

You’ll probably think to yourself, as you walk up to the front of the Gingerbread Man in Hummelstown, "This doesn’t look much like the other G-Man restaurants," and believe me, it isn’t. The MODE Happy Hour Review Crew concluded that the owner of the Gingerbread Man restaurants decided to appeal to the abundant tourist traffic on Hershey Park Drive and really try to lure them in with glitz.

Guy's at barThe front façade of this G-Man is all neon, a theme that carries throughout the art-deco, tin ceiling, bright-colored tile, and glass-block interior. The front signage sports the phrase "Bar & Grill". A powerful statement in an otherwise bland, somewhat tucked-away plaza, this G-Man epitomizes having a good time.

Once you’ve had a chance to adjust to the "unique" interior, you will quickly come to appreciate the 25+ projection televisions surface mounted in the walls around the entire perimeter of the interior. Every TV is easily spotted from the many booths and tables, several of which displayed the multi-player NTN trivia game.

The actual bar runs the length of the interior, down the right-hand side, and ends at an alcove, complete with two bar-sized pool tables and a few video games. The bathrooms were clean, and quite wild in their design, boasting five stalls in the Ladies room, and the world’s smallest urinal dividers in the Men’s room.

The Happy Hour runs from 4pm to 6pm, and offers various drink specials. Sunday through Thursday, there are food specials, but alas, on Fridays you’ll pay full-price for menu items. (Dinner specials start at 5pm, but that’s if you want a full dinner.)

The drink specials are formidable, and close to half-off for just about everything. We ordered four pitchers of Yuengling, a few top-shelf cocktails, and the G-Man sampler platter of appetizers, and our bill was just shy of $26.00, much lower than we expected.

The mugs for our lager arrived chilled, (not frosted). Our server, Day Manager Shelly Meashey was attentive and cheerful.

The music was courtesy of a CD jukebox, and played at a comfortable level.

The tables and booths filled steadily with the Friday night dinner crowd, and as we left around 7pm, this G-Man was almost packed.

Our conclusion: As Happy Hours go, it wouldn’t be a far stretch to plop this fancy G-Man in the middle of Las Vegas and not skip a beat. Toss in a few slot machines, throw the sports-book odds on a few of those projection TVs and you’d have one rockin’ party bar. But here in Central, PA,
go in a group and the party will definitely make itself. Go alone and you’ll probably leave alone.
