Local Parks Receive Top National Landscape Awards

Three city parks were recently recognized as being among the most beautiful park sites in the Nation. At a ceremony held earlier this month, representatives from H. Edward Black and Associates, the project designer and landscape architect, presented the City with the prestigious Medallion Awards for the Capital Area Greenbelt and Reservoir Park. A Medallion Award for the Wildwood Park Sanctuary was also presented to the Dauphin County Department of Parks and Recreation during a separate event. The park design awards for the three city-based parks were conferred on the city and county by the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The Mayor said Harrisburg’s award-winning projects are part of the Mayor’s ongoing Parks Improvement Program, which has realized more than $28 million in refurbishment and new investment in the city’s exciting parks and open spaces, as well as the addition of new parks and recreational facilities. The City’s parks have also hosted some 3 million visitors.

In addition to the Capital Area Greenbelt, which will comprise more than 20 miles of greenspace encircling the city when completed, and Reservoir Park, Harrisburg’s largest and oldest park site, the Wildwood Sanctuary was recognized for its “unique blend of environmental design considerations, implementation of educational goals regarding wetland values, identification and wildlife habits" among other things.

According to Barry Starke, President of the American Society of Landscape Architects, “The Medallion award program is designed to focus public attention on the landscapes that contribute to the everyday life of our communities. They give us an opportunity to commemorate the beauty and wonder that landscape architects have created and our citizens have enjoyed for the past century.”

The Medallion Award program is part of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ 100th Anniversary Celebration.
