Common Threads: Quilting —
A Musical, a Show, and More

Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College, November 4–7

Quilt closeupIn conjunction with the Brethren Heritage Quilt Show, The Fine and Performing Arts Department at Elizabethtown College will present the musical Quilters. Written by two women, the performance uses a quilt to historically represent a story of women on the frontier. Each of the 16 quilt squares featured in the musical represent an experience in each women’s life and, over the course of the play, call to the surface timely issues that are not usually associated with women of the pioneer.

To further the quilting theme, the college has scheduled a list of events to support the musical. Everyone is invited to participate in “Empty Bowls Meal,” a hunger awareness event prior to the musical on November 4 at which $10 will purchase a meal of bread and soup in a handcrafted bowl, and an opening reception for the Brethren Heritage Quilting Show is scheduled for November 5 from 6p–7:30p in Leffler Chapel, immediately prior to the performance of the musical production.

The Brethren Heritage Quilt Show will be on display at the Lyet Gallery in Leffler Chapel through December 15 and the musical production runs in the Musser Auditorium in Leffler Chapel through November 7. Tickets for the musical Quilting are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students and are available at the E-town College box office at 361-1170.

So, come to Elizabethtown College and support your common threads!

An Evening With Lou Rawls
The Forum
November 7

Lou Rawls Mug ShotIt’s not every night that a legendary performer has the opportunity to grace a local stage — and it’s surely not every night that the local stage is graced by a legendary performer among the likes of Lou Rawls. Until now! On November 7, in celebration of its 7th Annual Benefit Concert, Gaudenzia, Inc. will present the acclaimed vocal and Grammy Award-winning entertainer live at The Forum.

Known for his signature voice, Rawls won the Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance for “Natural Man” in 1971 and is perhaps best known for his 1976 hit ballad “You’ll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine),” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance. The deep-voiced, song-stylist is a consummate performer and is celebrated worldwide.

Experience the vocal mastery of Lou Rawls for yourself — his November 7 performance at The Forum begins at 7p and will benefit Gaudenzia, a non-profit organization that has been providing comprehensive substance abuse treatment and prevention services to the residents of Central PA for the last 30 years.

Tickets for the concert are $32 and are available for purchase by calling The BOX at 214-ARTS.

Be A Part of Sundance: A Benefit for Local Filmmaker Eric Spaar
The Creative Arts Studio
November 11

So, you can’t get enough of movies? You’re excited about all of the talk of local filmmakers and big-time productions hitting the area? Can’t wait for this city to become the cultural mecca of film that it promises to be? Then this event is for you!

On November 11, FilmSpeak founder Todd Shill invites you to help raise money to send one of our own to Colorado — to Sundance, that is.

Several months ago, local filmmaker Eric Spaar wrapped filming on his independent short Sees in Secret — shot entirely in Harrisburg. Since its completion, Sees in Secret has been submitted for consideration to Sundance and several other high-profile film festivals. This fundraising event is to raise money to produce a 16mm print of Sees in Secret that can be shown at the festivals.

The fundraiser will be held at The Creative Arts Studios in Enola and will be the perfect opportunity to mingle with other independent film lovers, enjoy modern sculpture, and send Spaar and his film on their way to national exposure — all the while keeping “the local fires burning for the cinema arts.” Let Sundance know what Harrisburg arts can do!

The benefit for Eric Spaar’s Sees in Secret on November 11 will take place from 6p–9p at The Creative Arts Studio, 606 Magaro Road, Enola. Tickets are $10 per person. See you there!

Née Danse Company Presents:
Butoh Performance Artist Maureen Fleming

Rose Lehrman Arts Theatre, HACC
November 13

DancerThere’s nothing like a great dance performance to get the spirit moving … and if that’s what you’re looking for, then the Rose Lehrman Arts Theatre on the HACC campus is the place for you! On November 13, The Née Danse Company will be presenting Maureen Fleming, a renowned Butoh performing artist from New York.

Described by Cleveland dance critic Frank Green as, “a dance form created post-Hiroshima Japan as a rejection of both the assimilation of western ballet technique and the rigidity of classical Japanese Noh and Kabuki styles”, butoh is a form of dance in which the artist has complete control of every inch and movement of the body.

In that manner, Fleming’s evening-length work, “After Eros,” is a combination of movement, projections, and music into surrealistic impressions in which the female body becomes a symbol for the earth’s regeneration.

The goal of my work is to reveal the transcendent, thorough images which focus on the human body as the vehicle of transformation. I am specifically interested in finding a universal art which touches the evolutionary traces embedded in human experience and transcends the limits of nationality and gender, placed on us all, in an aim of discovering what is truly universal about being human,” states Fleming

Maureen Fleming’s “Art of Eros” will be at HACC’s Rose Lehrman Arts Theatre on November 13. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and are available by calling The Née Danse Company at 232-3144.
