Be on the lookout for flying objects over Hersheypark … that is, flying objects of the hot air kind. On October 22, over 50 hot air balloons will begin to invade the skies of Hersheypark as part of the 11th Annual Balloonfest.Hot Air Balloon

The Hersheypark Balloonfest is a nationally acclaimed balloon festival, winning Balloon Life Magazine’s award for the Best Balloon Event in the East for the past two consecutive years. In addition, the 1998 Hersheypark Balloonfest received praise for its safety, organization, involvement, and fun.

In addition to craft and food vendors, model airplane and kite flying, children’s amusement rides, live music from acts such as Big Tubba Mista, and entertainment from the Popcorn Hat Players, highlights of the weekend will also include five scheduled balloon launches and an illuminated balloon glow. Individuals will also have the opportunity to walk the grounds and see the variations of styles, shapes, and sizes of the hot air balloons.

Held rain or shine, the 1999 Hersheypark Balloonfest will be open to the public, free of charge, October 22, 4p–7:30p; and October 23 and October 24 from dawn to dusk. The three-day event is located on the field adjacent to Hershey’s Chocolate World and admission is free.

 

Five Artist Exhibition
Art Association of Harrisburg
Opening Reception:

October 27 – November 25

StatueWood carvings, pastel landscapes, photographs, and mixed-media paintings will go on view at the Art Association of Harrisburg with a public reception the evening of October 23, from 5p–8p.

The five artists participating in the exhibit all come from varied and esteemed backgrounds, citing among their many experiences national and international juried shows, numerous exhibitions, and completions of art-related education of various levels.

The Art Association’s exhibition will be comprised of the works of Alica Laputka, Thomas Head, Linda Steinhardt, Robert Studzinski, and Sandra Vista. With a storied pasts and successful careers behind them, the work of the artists guarantee a good showing — featuring topics ranging from landscapes and carvings to paintings using colored sand and photographs of Venezuelan natives.

This featured works of the five artists will be on display at the Art Association from October 27 through November 25, with an opening reception on October 23, 5p-8p.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

 

aMAZE and Beyond: A Playful Experience About Serious Stuff

Sure, it’s a maze … but it’s a lot more than that, too. It’s a fun project that is designed to draw attention to the prejudices and stereotypes that exist in our world — all by putting one foot in front of the other and weaving your way through the maze!

Beginning October 28 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania people of all ages will enter an aMAZING world that will arouse curiosity and challenge old thought patterns. aMAZE and Beyond: A Playful Experience About Serious Stuff is a dynamic, engaging interactive exhibit Amazethat offers an opportunity to explore the complex issues of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination in a playful way.

Beginning with an introduction to these concepts of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, visitors (the exhibit is targeted for ages 8 to 15) proceed to the highlight of the exhibition — a walk-through maze! Simultaneously a work of art and a learning laboratory, experientially rich and visually stimulating, the approximately 2,700 square-feet of pathways and activity rooms will be a fully accessible, self-guided exhibit whose objective is to explore these complex issues.

Included in aMAZE and BEYOND will be over 20 interactive activities and a variety of mazes, all creations of internationally known maze artist Adrian Fisher of England.

Edgar Allan Poe Evermore

It’s almost that time of year … and who better to get you into the creepy-crawly, spooky, Halloween mood than famed author Edgar Allan Poe?

For the 11th straight year, Mount Hope Estate and Winery will play host to the annual Edgar Allan Poe Evermore festival, a production that celebrates the creations of the tormented and haunted legend.

The 1999 version of the festival is set in 1848 at a gathering of the "Mount Hope Literary Society," with Poe himself as an honored guest — reciting "The Raven" and "Never Bet The Devil Your Head" to those in attendance. Not to fall short on Poe’s litany of works, however, the evening also promises to be complete with Poe characters, survivors, and esteemed celebrities from the time, including Charles Darwin, Mary Shelley, and Jules Verne. In addition to literary monsters, the evening will also include the unusual and unexpected, as well as free wine samples.

The Mansion at Mount Hope Estate is located 15 miles north of Lancaster and 14 miles east of Hershey on Route 72, one-half mile south of the PA Turnpike Exit 20. Performances begin Friday, October 29th and continue Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through November 14. Friday performances are at 6p and 9p. Saturday and Sunday performances are at 1p, 4p, and 7p. Special weekday performances are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7p.

Ticket prices are $14.95. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 665-7021, ext. 231, Monday — Friday, 9a-4p.

Meet the Budweiser Clydesdales
Throughout Central PA

What’s that noise you hear? Well, don’t look now, but some of the finest horses around are hoofing their way into Central PA. That’s right, Budweiser’s world famous Clydesdale horses are making their way into the Capitol region — just for your viewing pleasure!

Brought to North America in 1842, the breed are descended from the great war horses of Europe. Known for their tremendous strength and graceful strides, the horses became synonymous with the Budweiser name in 1933 when August A. Busch presented his father with a team of the horses and a bright red brewery wagon to celebrate the end of Prohibition. Little did he know he had just begun a tradition that continues until this day.

Today, the Clydesdales are a living symbol of Anheuser-Busch and log over 100,000 travel miles a year to visit the small towns and cities across the country.

The eight-horse team will be appearing at various locations throughout the greater Harrisburg area: at City Island on 10/14, 12p–3p; at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park and Lancaster Square on 10/15, 12p–3p; at Lebanon’s VFW Anniversary Parade on 10/16, 10a; at Duncannon’s Mutzbaugh’s Market on 10/17, 12p–3p; and at Steelton’s Borough Hall on 10/18, 12p–3p.
