Restorations Completed at Former McFarland Press Building
Harrisburg, PA –
Earlier this month, Mayor Stephen R. Reed formally dedicated the newly-restored McFarland Press Building at 1139 Mulberry Street. The $6.35 million rehabilitation project, conducted by McFarland Press Associates, now provides 49 affordable housing units to low and moderate-income persons, as well as ample rehearsal and performance space for the Danzante cultural group.

Used continuously for a century as a major printing facility and publishing house, the site underwent serious blight after its abandonment before its restoration by a public-private partnership involving the City, the state, the Federal Home Loan Bank, the non-profit Capital Region Community Action Commission, and the privately-held Pennrose Properties and Pro Development Company.

Reed said the restoration effect is a signature preservation effort for Allison Hill. The project involved the complete rehabilitation of the two-building complex, ‘gutting’ most of the formerly blighted sight, and installing the likes of new electrical systems and home amenities in the one, two, and three bedroom units.

Reed said the project also creates a community arts center, operated by Danzante. The $250,000 restoration project now underway for their space allows for 5,400 square feet of rehearsal, performance, and office space.
