Broadway in Lancaster:
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
September 16 – November 6
Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DreamcoatAndrew Lloyd Webber’s tale of “a man who uses his faith and his wisdom to overcome his injustices and make his dreams come true” is making its way to Central Pennsylvania. The compelling story, a musical mix of Broadway-style music, rock, country, and calypso has long been heralded as one of Webber’s finest productions, and is set to take the stage of the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre on September 16.

Set “way, way back many centuries ago” in the land of Egypt, Dreamcoat relates the tale of Jacob, his twelve sons — and the drama that results from one fabulous multi-colored coat. Given to Joseph by his father as a symbol of paternal pride, the “dreamcoat” creates jealousy among the brothers, inspires spite, and sends Joseph away from his family and into slavery where he interprets dreams and becomes a favorite of the King, Pharaoh.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a tremendous display of music, drama, intrigue, adventure — and colorful costumes! The production begins September 16 and will run through November 6. Performances are Tuesday – Saturday with dinner at 6p and the show at 8p. Selected matinees and Sunday twilights are also available. Call 898-1900 for reservations.

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre is located at 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster.

Exhibit: Pennsylvania Realism: The Turn of the Century
September 16 – October 30
Cumberland County Historical Society’s Miller Gallery

Exhibit: Pennsylvania Realism: The Turn of the CenturyLandscapes, portraits, still life paintings, and frames created by over 24 Pennsylvania artists between the 1870s and 1930s are featured in the Cumberland County Historical Society’s major 1999 exhibit, Pennsylvania Realism: The Turn of the Century.

As part of this exhibit, many of the works are being shown for the first time and provide a rare opportunity to view selections by such notable Pennsylvania artists as Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Lloyd Mifflin, Esther Groome, and Arthur Sparks.

Exhibit: Pennsylvania Realism: The Turn of the CenturyThe title Pennsylvania Realism refers to the three regions of the state — Southeastern, South Central, and Southwestern — where these artists drew inspiration from everyday scenes and distinctive local landscapes to create their art. In fact, many of the landscapes included in the exhibit are easily identifiable to their region, including Mifflin’s paintings of the Susquehanna River Valley.

In the exhibit, art lovers will be able to view the different styles of the artists —from the more elegant “Impressionist”-style paintings to the more realistic, dark paintings. Viewers will also be able to see ample selections of works of the women who were just then emerging into the art world. Also, in addition to landscapes, many of the regional painters produced portraits and more traditional works of still life.

The exhibit, Pennsylvania Realism: The Turn of the Century, is located in the Society’s new Miller Gallery at 21 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle. Society hours are Monday 7p-9p; Tuesday – Friday, 10a-4p; and Saturday 10a-1p.

Light the Night Leukemia Walk
September 23
City Island, Harrisburg

Light the Night Leukemia WalkLove to exercise? Looking to support a good cause? Well, at the Light the Night Leukemia Walk you can accomplish both goals at the same time. On September 23, Harrisburg’s City Island will be inundated by an estimated 500 walkers willing to spend a few hours supporting the Leukemia Society’s effort to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

As part of the Walk, participants will carry illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer — participants will carry red balloons and cancer patients and survivors will carry white balloons. In addition, Dedication Banners will be displayed to give everyone the opportunity to place a name or message in honor or in memory of a family member or friend with cancer.

Although there is no registration fee, those raising $25 or more will carry one of the Leukemia Society’s unique illuminated balloons. Participants will be awarded a variety of incentives based on their level of fundraising.

Individual walkers are welcome and companies and families are invited to form teams to walk in the evening event. Registration for the Walk begins at 5p at the Carousel Pavilion on City Island, with the Walk beginning promptly at 7p. A post walk celebration will feature live music by “Rosey and the Naturals”, clowns, refreshments, and more.

Held at the Hilton Hotel Towers, this concert will be the first time in almost ten years that Blake has returned to Harrisburg on behalf of the CPFJ. Born in Philadelphia, Blake has studied violin at a number of educational levels, and studied East Indian music through a grant he was awarded in the ’70s.

Blake first gained international recognition as a sideman in the Grover Washington, Jr. Band in the mid-’70s, and has since dedicated his time to a career in the jazz/R&B industry, continuing to release albums and perform live with such acts as the McCoy Tyner Trio and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

In addition to his performances, Blake also teaches at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and is on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

John Blake will be performing at the Hilton Towers Hotel on September 26 from 5p-9p. For ticket information, please call the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz office at 540-1010.
