Four Artist Invitational Exhibition
Art Association
August 7 Thru September 2

A provocative four-artist exhibition opens early this month at the Art Association of Harrisburg. The show will be comprised of colour-block prints by Billy Morrow Jackson of Illinois; black-and-white photos by Frank Rodick of Canada; oil portraits by Catherine Porter Prescott of Lisburn; and figurative mixed-media sculptures by Joanne MacDonnel Foster of Ohio.

The exhibit, which is slated to open with a public reception August 7, features the work of the four artists and highlights their eclectic creations. The garden reception, held at the Association’s Italianate mansion, will also feature entertainment by the jazz group The Carrothers Brothers. In addition to the exhibit and the music, featured artist Billy Morrow Jackson will be on hand to sign copies of the book Interpretation of Time and Light, a work by the late Dr. Howard E. Wooden that features illustrations by the artist.

The four artists included in the exhibit are widely acclaimed for their work and are known as much for their dedication to their art forms as they are for their knowledge on their subjects. Some of the works included in the exhibit feature pieces from Foster’s “Warrior” series, Jackson’s “Siti Suite” (inspired by his wife), Prescott’s portraits, and Rodick’s photographs of the postmodern urban landscape.

The public reception at the Art Association Gallery, 21 North Front Street, will be held from 5pm – 8pm with the exhibition running through September 2. Gallery hours are 9am – 9pm Monday through Thursday, 9am – 4pm Friday, 10am – 4p Saturday, and 12p – 3p on Sunday. Call 236-1432 for more information.

4th Annual Amazing Maize Maze
Cherry Crest Farm
NOW Thru October 30

4th Annual Amazing Maize MazeIt’s corn. It’s a maze. It’s both … and it’s a great time! For the 4th straight year, Cherry-Crest Farm plays host to the Amazing Maize Maze. Featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and in People Magazine, Cherry-Crest Farm prides itself on making the maze not only a challenge, but, according to Cherry-Crest Farm owner Jack Coleman, “educational and fun.” And this year’s edition surely fits the bill — the 5 acre maze (over 150,000 cornstalks) has been sculpted into the shape of the state of Pennsylvania, and is groomed to include not only four huge stars that represent Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, the Poconos, and Paradise (where the maze is located); but the historic Liberty Bell, as well. And to make the maze even more amazing, there’s a larger-than-life American flag created by 14,000 red, white, and blue petunias.

The Maize Maze, hand-groomed by Farm staff and visited by nearly 120,000 people since 1996, is produced by former Disney Broadway producer and current co-owner of The American Maze Company, Don Frantz. While similar mazes have been popping up all over the country, Cherry-Crest Farm prides itself on being the most attended corn maze in the US.

A self-guided walking tour, the journey through the maze takes approximately an hour. While there is staff on hand to help, the maze comes complete with clues, tunnel slides, watering stations, rest areas, and all sorts of other surprises.

Located two miles east of Strasburg, the Farm also offers a play area, private petting zoo, and guided tours of the working on-site farm. The maze will be open 10am to dusk through October 30. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children 5 to 11. Children under 5 are admitted free. Cherry Crest Farm is located at 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks, PA.

See you at the Maze!

Elegant Machinery
York Catholic High School
August 14

Contretemps Dance Theatre
Contretemps Dance Theatre is proud to announce its sixth evening of ballet and dance. The showcase, featuring works of five choreographers, is set to an eclectic mix of classical, new age, and contemporary music. The program, entitled Elegant Machinery, was named as such, according to artistic director and co-founder Kristen Gleason, “because it is an illustration of what we are as dancers.” Ever mindful of what she names her showcases, Gleason attests that this year’s performance will more than live up to its bill, as it features the “elegant” mechanisms of six dancers in 10 diverse pieces.

Contretemps Dance Theatre, an independent company, was established in 1994 as a York-area studio. The troupe, primarily college-aged dancers, has given four full-length concerts since its debut in August of 1995 when it performed in front of a standing-room only crowd at the William Penn Performing Arts Institute. Currently, the company boasts a repertoire that contains over forty original works.

Elegant Machinery will be held at York Catholic High School, 601 East Springettsbury Avenue, on August 14 and will begin at 8p. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The company will also have an open dress rehearsal at 8p on August 13, at which the company will ask for a freewill donation to benefit York Catholic High School.
