Channels Food Rescue Helps The Hungry By Lisa Hummel You see them everyday. The commercials depicting the hungry lining the streets of somewhere far away, far enough away for us think it doesnt affect us. Its a sight that we can escape from by changing the channel and removing the image from our minds. Sure, we know that hunger exists. And maybe we send a check each month to a village in some distant country. Or maybe we keep promising ourselves that we will. But hunger doesnt just exist in the streets of some unnamed city or some small village like those that fill our television screens late at night. Hunger exists right here, all around us, in the city of Harrisburg. And its not too late for you to do your part.
According to Andrew Dowling, Chairman of the Golf Committee, this years event hopes to raise approximately $20,000 and is set to host more than 100 golfers, besting last years total of 60. Dowling, also a member on the Board of Channels, sees this tournament as an excellent opportunity for local golfers to fight hunger in the area. Most of us have a very good standard of living and we need to give back to the community. What a better way to give back than to help those that cant help themselves. He also took the opportunity to emphasize the uniqueness of the organization, stating that Channels merely helps the less fortunate by simply taking resources that already exist and rechanneling them. In operation for fourteen years, Channels Food Rescue is a charitable, non-profit organization designed to transport excess food from large feeding programs, such as catered events at places like HersheyPark Arena or local restaurants, to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other agencies in the Greater Harrisburg area who feed the less fortunate. The program currently delivers more than 50,000 pounds of prepared and perishable food per month to more than 70 agencies all over the area, including such organizations as the St. Francis Soup Kitchen, Bethesda Mission, and the Salvation Army. A free service, Channels also plays a large part in saving money for these agencies because much of the otherwise appointed food budget can be redirected to other worthwhile services that the local agencies provide. In addition to many other backers, this years Channels Golf Classic is headed by two principal sponsors, The Hall Foundation and Wrays Music Store, Inc. Bill Selosky of Wrays Music became interested in being a sponsor for Channels after years of not only helping the hungry, but fielding hundreds and hundreds of various charitable solicitations. Citing hunger as a universal problem that can no longer be denied, Selosky and his company decided to join the organization in its fight against hunger in the area. Its one of the most basic things in life, that we need to eat, Selosky said, adding, This is something Im going to be devoting my life to. This isnt a one-shot project. A some-time golfer himself, Selosky echoed the sentiment that this tournament is the perfect occasion for area residents to battle hunger and enjoy a round of golf at the same time, encouraging their participation and urging them to do whats right, think about what it would be like to go hungry. The ninth annual Channels Golf Classics is set to be held June 7 and is still accepting individual and corporate sponsorship and participation. Make this your opportunity to help Channels in their efforts and Tee Off Against Hunger. For more information, call Channels Food Rescue at 774-8220. [files/NavBar/DefaultNavBar.htm] |
