| For Immediate Release March 1999 Press Releases Food Bank Selects New Executive Director Harrisburg, PA The Board of Directors of the South Central PA Food Bank has selected Kendall Hanna as its new Executive Director. The Food Banks Board President, Tom Rowan stated, "Kendall has a proven track record of success in the non-profit community and will inspire all of us to work with the Food Banks member agencies in alleviating hunger throughout central Pennsylvania." The South Central Food Bank is a non-profit organization that solicits, warehouses, and distributes excess food and grocery products to a network of more than 350 charitable food programs throughout central Pennsylvania. The Food Bank is also commited to fostering education and awareness of hunger issues in both the private and public sectors. The Food Bank, established in 1982, distributed over ten million pounds of food in 1998 and has plans for growth including the addition of 12,000 square feet to the current facility. JPL Productions Wins Communicators Award Harrisburg, PA JPL Productions of Harrisburg won two Crystal Awards of Excellence and one Honorary Mention during judging for the 1998 Communicator Awards. The Crystal Award of Excellence is "presented to those entrants whose ability to communicate elevates them above the best in the field." Honorary Mention is granted to "those entries that meet the high standards of the industry."

Since 1985, Alternatives, an adult training facility for people with significant disabilities, has been providing services to assist people with mental and physical disabilities in the Capital Area lead more independent lives. Harrisburg, PA; Whitehall, PA Capstar Broadcasting Corporation of Austin, TX, announced that it has agreed to acquire local radio stations, WTPA-FM and WNCE-FM, from Quaker State Broadcasting Corporation of Pennsylvania. WTPA-FM, licensed to Mechanicsburg, PA, employs an album-oriented rock format. WNCE-FM, licensed to Palmyra, PA, programs an easy-listening format. The stations broadcast to the local Harrisburg market. The stations will be operated by Atlantic Star Communications, Capstars northeastern regional operating division. Atlantic Star, based in Whitehall, PA, currently operates Capstar radio stations WTCY-AM and WNNK-FM, which serve the Harrisburg, PA, market. Ron Giovanniello will continue to serve as the General Manager of WTCY-AM and WNNK-FM, while Michael Brandon, current Vice President and General Manager of WTPA-FM and WNCE-FM, will continue to manage those two stations. Capstar Broadcasting Corporation, owner and operator of more than 350 radio stations in over 75 small to mid-sized markets nationwide, is one of the largest radio broadcasting company in the United States in terms of revenues and number of stations owned. "Soup & a Bowl" Event to Benefit South Central PA Food Bank Harrisburg, PA The South Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for the fifth annual "Soup & a Bowl" event to be held at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill on Monday, March 15 from 11am 1:30pm. Ticketholders for the event receive a warm inviting lunch of soup, bread and beverage in addition to choosing one of the handmade bowls as a keepsake. The lunch, provided by the Radison Penn Harris, consists of one of two soups, with ticket prices set at $15 a person. Tickets are available by calling the Food Bank at 717-564-1700.

Harrisburg, PA To better inform Harrisburgs African-American population about the symptoms and dangers of diabetes a disease that adversely affects one in four African Americans the American Diabetes Association announced it will be holding community-based activities in Dauphin County. These activities are a central component of the Associations African-American outreach initiative. They use trained community volunteers to arrange and hold the events in churches and other community settings.
Harrisburg, PA The Tom Joyner Morning Show debuts on March 1 on 1400 The Touch, WTCY-AM. WTCY-AM will air the show weekday mornings from 6am 10am and also air Tom Joyners weekend show, RIGHTBACKATCHA on Saturday mornings from 7 9am. WTCY-AM will become one of 96 affiliates in the country to carry the nationally syndicated show. WTCY-AM is only the third AM station in the country to air the show.
Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed reported that the Southland Corporation, parent company of 7-Eleven convenience stores, has awarded a $1000 grant to the Mayors Commission on Literacy for the operation of a newly created Literacy Hotline. The grant was awarded under the auspices of 7-Elevens nationally recognized People Who Read Achieve Program. Persons interested in obtaining literacy training or assistance can contact the hotline number and be directed to the appropriate agency or program by calling the new hotline number, 717-558-7530. This is the regions first-ever literacy hotline.
Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed today urges city residents to obtain flood insurance for their properties if they do not currently have such coverage. Harrisburgs extensive flood preparation activities have resulted in a 15% reduction in flood insurance premiums for city businesses and residents from what would otherwise be charged to residents outside the city. The Mayor said the cost of flood insurance is subsidized by the federal government under the National Flood Insurance Program and is available to all tenants and property owners nationwide and can be obtained from any licensed insurance agent.
