The 200-member organization, comprised of local chamber of commerce managers and others employed in chamber of commerce work, was formed to enhance the quality and relevance of chamber management in Pennsylvania. Groce has served as Chamber President since 1995, and is the first female to hold the position. She also serves on the boards of the Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC), The Chamber/ACES Foundation, and the Harrisburg-Hershey-Carlisle Tourism and Convention Bureau. Groce is a member of the Dauphin County Local Emergency Planning Council and the Dauphin County Technical School Advisory Council as well as many other area non-profit business, travel and education organizations. Groce assumed her position January 1, 1999. Dickinson College Announces Masters Degree Opportunities in England Carlisle, PA Dickinson College recently formalized an agreement with the University of East Anglia (UEA), in Norwich, England, that will allow Dickinson College graduates the opportunity to pursue a Masters degree at the British university. This program is an extension of the 10-year relationship that Dickinson and UEA already enjoy in their undergraduate programs. Real Estate Firm Adds Partner Harrisburg, PA Rothman, Schubert, & Reed, REALTORS, has announced that W. Greg Rothman has been named a full partner in the firm. The Camp Hill-based real estate firm is a leader in commercial and residential brokerage, appraisal services, property management, and real estate development. Mr. Rothman is a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Uptown Children to Benefit from Donation to Purchase New Playground Harrisburg, PA Sharon Fach, district representative of the McKesson General Medical Corporation Philanthropic Foundation (Middletown), has notified officials at Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church that the uptown Harrisburg community center has been selected by the San Francisco-based corporation to receive $7,000 to replace aging playground equipment. Established in 1994, the McKesson General Medical Corporation Philanthropic Foundation, headed by Marcia Argyris, is in its second year of philanthropic giving. With this years emphasis on children, the Foundation accepted the recommendation of local officials, Sharon Fach and District Manager, Christopher Carlson, that Neighborhood Center should receive a major financial gift. Business Advisory Council Formed Harrisburg, PA The ATHENA Foundation has chosen Central Pennsylvania as its first national site for the kick off of its PowerLink Program. Business leaders from Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, York, and Lebanon counties have announced the formation of the Business Advisory Council to implement the ATHENA PowerLink Program. The mission of the new organization will be to assist women-owned businesses to expand profitably through the use of volunteer professional advisory panels. Local business owner Michael Brenner, owner of the Brenner Family of Dealerships underwrote the cost of the start-up investment. Brenner, the incoming chairman of the CREDC, said, "We are committed to the community and are honored to be able to help women business owners in the Capital Region." Business Leaders of the Year Named as City Notes Record Number of New Businesses Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed presented the City of Harrisburgs top business recognition awards to Michael A. Brenner, owner and chief Executive Officer of the Brenner Family of Dealerships, as Business Leader of the Year; Jorge and Sylvia Marroquin, owners of Marroquin, Inc., as Small Business Leaders of the Year; and Stephen and K.J. Weinstock, owners of Stocks on 2nd, as the 1998 Business Rookies of the Year. Wellness Center Opens in Penbrook Borough Harrisburg, PA Massa Therapeutics Wellness Center opened for operation in the Penbrook borough on Walnut Street, close to downtown Harrisburg and the Colonial Park area. The center is owned and operated by Shirley E. Arnold NCTMB and Sharon E. Muzio RN, who both bring an extensive healthcare background to the Center. The Center caters to all of your wellness needs, offering therapeutic massage, aromatherapy, and wellness education to the community at large, as well as to corporate clients. Allied Arts Fund to Receive First Legacy Gift Harrisburg, PA The Allied Arts Fund announced that is has received its first legacy gift from former Board member and Campaign Chairman, Charles L. Stoop. This generous gift comes as the result of a charitable remainder unitrust established by Mr. Stoop at The Greater Harrisburg Foundation to benefit nine named organizations, one of which is the Allied Arts Fund. When the trust terminates at Mr. Stoops death, a permanent endowment fund will be created to provide annual support to the Allied Arts Fund and its affiliated arts and cultural organizations. Swenson Plaza Improvments Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed earmarked the remaining funds in the Walnut Street Bridge Trust Fund for upcoming improvements to Swenson Plaza, the eastern entrance to the historic structure located at Front and Walnut Streets in downtown Harrisburg. Damaged by ice and flood waters in 1996, a variety of fundraising initiatives and donations resulted in nealy $100,000 being contributed for Bridge related improvements. Over the past decade, Swenson Plaza has become a much used public gathering place for ceremonies, festivals, musical performances, fundraising activities, and other events. The Plaza project will be incorporated into an already-approved city and federally funded walkway, lighting, paving, and drainage improvement project being undertaken throughout Riverfront Park by the city.

The season opener is Diva for a Day: Aria Interesting in Singing? On Feb 21, at 5pm at Saint Pauls Baptist Church, 1201 N. 17th St. Harrisburg. Harrisburg, PA Effective January 4, 1999, Capitol Area Transits Route D Shoppers Special schedule adjusted to make it fully accessible to wheelchairs. The addition of accessibility on this route will make lift-equipped buses available on portions of Routes 7, 18, 19 and on all of Route D. Neighborhood Center Seeks Campbells Labels Harrisburg, PA Midstate soup eaters are asked to save their labels and send them to Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church, which needs to collect 383,486 labels by June 30, 1999. Already 65 percent of the way to its goal of 1,095,000 labels, Neighborhood Center will have to forfeit thousands of labels which "expire" on June 30, 1999, unless it gets enough for a new 15-passenger van. Harrisburg, PA The Midtown Market District and The State Museum of Pennsylvania annouce an art and independent film series to be held at the auditorium of The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Third and North Streets, Harrisburg. Proceeds will help defray the Midtown Market Districts costs of relocating the former Palmyra Arts Cinema into the Midtown District. Beginning Saturday, January 23, 1999 with the showing of Cinema Paradiso, the series will offer a different independent film at 3 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month through April 1999. Other films selected as part of the series include, Eat, Drink, Man, Woman scheduled for February 27, Hudsucker Proxy, scheduled for March 27 and El Mariachi scheduled for April 24. Kate Brooks Associate Professor at Dickinson College will be on hand at the opening of Cinema Paradiso, on January 23 to speak on independent films and why these four were selected for the series. Cost to attend any one film in the series is $8.50 per person or $32 per person for the four films. Price includes a $.50 per ticket service charge, $4 of the ticket price goes to support the Midtown Market Districts Arts Cinema Project. Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced that the U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire as many as 260 temporary staff, starting this August, to perform field services prior to the actual start of the Year 2000 Census. The 30-hour per week positions involve six weeks of work with wages ranging from $9.75 to $12.75 per hour, depending upon the job classification. Openings exist for enumerators, crew leaders, field operations supervisors, office operations supervisors, recruiting assistants, and clerks. The staff will be used to confirm housing addresses, with enumerators visiting every third housing unit in a block of highway to verify the addressee and to confirm adjoining addresses. This allows the Census Bureau to more accurately send out the Census forms in 2000.
Reed said the work, which totals $216,539, includes a Key 93 Grant of $101,539 from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, $100,000 in matching funds from the city, and $15,000 in private donations from the Dauphin Deposit Bank and Trust Company, First Union Bank, and Backyard Benefits, Inc. Reed said the work is part of his ongoing Parks Improvement Program, which has realized more than $28 million in new investment in dozens of city parks, playgrounds, and open spaces since 1985.

Dalrymple, President and CEO of Dauphin National Bank, a locally owned Independent Community Bank with offices in Central Pennsylvania announced, "the Board of Directors decided to change the name of the bank to Vartan National Bank."
