Walnut Street Pastry & Deli
One of Harrisburg’s Best Kept Secrets

By Sandi Mauer

Walnut Street Pastery & DeliIf you’re at all like me, your life can sink into a pretty well-defined groove. You eat at the same three places for lunch every week, rotating only the days you go to which one. Well, hold onto your packets of Sweet-n-Low. There’s a great place right in the middle of downtown Harrisburg that I have overlooked forever. You know how it is, you’re in a hurry going to Strawberry Square and you rush right by the shops along the way, never really giving much thought or attention to them. Then you’ve probably missed the Walnut Street Pastry & Deli, just as I did. It’s about a block east of Strawberry Square, and they are the most elegant yet non-pretentious restaurant, complete with white table coverings and pink napkins.

If you like the decor, you’ll love the food. It’s not a Cheap Lunch with Betty joint for sure, but the variety is nice and everything’s fresh.

If you stop in for breakfast, expect anything from omelets to pancakes to eggs “served your way” or benedict style — including the seafarer with lump crabmeat or baby shrimp. (Yum! I haven’t had better since I visited Annapolis.)

Lunch and dinner selections range from grilled and cold sandwiches, including burgers (again, “served your way”), a classic Reuben, or a roasted veggie sandwich, to salads like a chef salad or spinach salad with hot bacon dressing. Monday through Friday, there are varying specials, which reach from classic potpies to chicken cerubi to tenderloin beef tips over noodles. The chowders, bisques, and soups du jour are sure to warm your bones on a brisk winter day. The house specialties are vegetarian chili and French onion soup, both delicious and filling.

But the meals aren’t the main attraction at the Walnut Street Pastry & Deli. Their friendly (and talkative) staff also offers some nice tricks to make your lunch endeavors a lot easier. For instance, if you leave your business card, they’ll fax their daily specials right to your office. And, if you are ordering for 10 or more, they’ll deliver right to your door — a perfect solution when you don’t want to leave the warmth of your office on a cold winter day.

If you’re entertaining, holding a morning meeting or business luncheon, or having an event after work, the Walnut Street Pastry & Deli even caters for any occasion. They specialize in all types of pastries and exotic desserts (mmmmmm, don’t get me started) and will custom bake cakes to your very own specifications. Custom baked desserts? Did somebody say dessert? Would you please excuse me for a moment. If you need to know more, you’ll find me on Walnut Street, indulging in my main weakness, dessert. Remember, tell ‘em MODE sent ya!
