Local School Receives TV Coverage
in Japan The Circle School is based on a democratic, self-initiated education. Students and staff, each with one vote, work together to govern the school. Students are responsible, and fully in charge, of deciding what, when, and how they will learn. Preparing for the responsibility and freedom of the "real world," kids at The Circle School run the school and run their lives. Japanese schools, although academically excellent, have recently been criticized for stifling individually and creativity, and the Japanese have begun to examine the comparative freedom of American schooling. With the documentary, set to air nationwide in Japan in early 1999, NHK Enterprises will present The Circle Schools unique brand of freedom, and hopes to open the eyes of Japanese viewers to these new ideas in education. The Circle School is a non-profit, private academic school located at 210 Oakleigh Avenue off Derry Street in Harrisburg. Students aged three-and-a-half thru high school may be accepted at any time during the year.
