| Pennsylvania Breweries A Must Read for Beer Lovers Publisher: Stackpole Books By Ed Yashinsky If it seems that you cant throw a rock these days without hitting a microbrewery or brewpub, youre right. Its nearly impossible to hit the road and not stumble across a small brewery serving very fresh, nifty-named ales and lagers for any type of tastebud. With so many microbreweries and brewpubs, it was only a matter of time before books started sprouting up preaching (or poaching) the virtues of local craft breweries.
Pennsylvania Breweries is divided into six major sections one covering what Bryson calls The Old Guard (longtime Pennsylvania breweries that survived prohibition) and five sections that divide Pennsylvania into regions (Philadelphia, Horse Country to the Delaware, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, the Historic Triangle, Upstate Beer Adventure, and Pittsburgh). Whether it be Yuengling Brewing Company, Samuel Adams Brew House, Church Brew Works, or any other of Pennsylvanias 48 breweries, Bryson delivers an in-depth description that touches on what makes each brewery unique as well as an honest opinion about the quality of beer. Following the description, Bryson breaks down key information about brewery size and capacity, tour availability and hours of operation, his favorite beer, and special brewery events. And just when it seems that the beer information might be too much to swallow, Bryson switches gears and tackles nearby attractions and lodging, as well as a listing of local bars and pubs that offer some of the best beer selection in Pennsylvania. On top of that, there are several general articles that tackle subjects ranging from the Pennsylvania Liquor Code (this should silence anyone who would ever wonder out loud about why you cant buy beer in grocery stores) to the brewing process and beer definitions. Pennsylvania Breweries also contains a generous glossary (for beer geeks who cant get enough beer information). Pennsylvania Breweries is an indispensable book for anyone who travels around the Keystone State and enjoys good beer. |
