Dining Review
By Sue Barry

Paper Moon is a cozy, intimate restaurant in downtown Harrisburg where the ambience reminds one of the many bistros lining neighborhoods of Paris. White-clothed, ceramic-topped tables are small enough to allow private conversations between partners among tight quarters. Hushed ceiling fans and a good ventilation system take care of the cigarette smoke puffed by several patrons in the one-room restaurant. Walls of dark purple set the stage for movie posters including the 1995 film, Jeffrey, and of course, the restaurant’s namesake. Food portions do not relate to the restaurant’s diminutive size, as ample white plates are barely seen under the simply presented courses. Like the crowd, prices are handsome.

Paper MoonParisian bistro comparisons over for now, Paper Moon serves straightforward American restaurant dishes featuring a couple of choices in each category of steaks, veal, pork, seafood, chicken, and pasta. At $16.95, the Paper Moon Combo tops off the high end of the menu with a six ounce filet served with a jumbo lump crab cake and jumbo fried shrimp. You can’t go wrong with anything served here that sports lump crabmeat, as generous servings of the pearly-white plump crab are staggering. Veal Oscar ($15.95) is classic through and through; the delicate veal topped with that sweet crab and tender yet firm asparagus spears, then dressed with a Hollandaise that holds together until the last bite. A tad disappointing were Pork Medallions ($13.95), seared then topped with a peppercorn cream sauce that was just unexciting, and the heavy Shrimp Tarragon ($13.95), blended with brandy, port wine, and cream — it had good flavor, but the cream sauce began to coagulate halfway through dinner. The daily steak special was also a bit off on the evening of our visit as a filet topped with ratatouille (a mixture of eggplant, zucchini, onion, tomato and peppers), admittedly may have not been the best beef choice of the evening. To the contrary, a selection from the menu, Filet ala Moon ($15.95), delighted one dining companion with an eight ounce filet filled with blue cheese and wrapped in bacon. Back down to earth came another member of our party with the universal and casual appeal of grilled chicken breast with sautéed mushrooms, onions and bacon, topped with cheddar ($11.95).

Paper Moon's Owners, Ray Marisco and Ron RohranA cup of the Soup de Jour or dinner salad accompanies entrées, and if the soup happens to be homemade New England Clam Chowder ($2.00), be sure to partake in the creamy, briny bisque. Similar to a salad bar on a plate, the dinner salad is huge and fresh with red cabbage, tomatoes, cucumber slices, green peppers, fresh mushrooms, carrot slivers, and croutons, all segregated around crisp leaf lettuce until the diner incorporates it all with dressing of choice. Wines by the glass and beer selections are conventional as are appetizers, with Shrimp Cocktail and Crab Stuffed Mushrooms, both at $6.95, heading the modest list. Citrus shows up no where else other than as a nice surprise, orange-enhanced butter that is served with freshly baked bread early during the meal. If you still have room, a fully loaded dessert tray allures with an exemplary slice of pecan pie in all of its gooey glory, which had to vie for attention among other decadent choices.

Now, sit back with a specialty coffee and get back into the Parisian bistro style-mode by joining the late-night dining crowd as conversations stretch into the oui hours.
