Jazz Pianist to be Showcased in New York

Harrisburg, PA—Steve Rudolph, area pianist and president of the Central PA Friends of Jazz, has been selected to perform at the annual Jazz Times Convention at the Marriott World Trade Center in New York City, October 3—November 2. He will be presented as one of 10 emerging artists selected from all over the world. Rudolph will perform original compositions with his trio that features Grammy winning drummer Bill Goodwin and bassist Paul Langsoch.

 

Fort Hunter’s Annual Fall Festival

Harrisburg, PA—Nostalgic family pleasures are the highlight at Fort Hunter’s annual fall festival, Fort Hunter Day, on Sunday, September 20, from 10 a. to 5 p.

Enjoy wholesome fun for everyone. Participate in children’s crafts and activities, tour the Fort Hunter Mansion, shop at the arts and crafts show, take a pony ride, a hayride and a carriage ride, view demonstrations such as rug hooking, applebutter making, quilting, spinning, weaving, and many others. Arts in Society Conference to be Held at Dickinson College

Carlisle, PA—The identity of the visual and performing arts in American culture has been significantly challenged, questioned and redefined during the last decades of the twentieth century. “Arts in Society: Strategies for the 21st Century,” a conference to be held at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., September 10-13, will address the ramifications of these changes through talks, panel discussions, and workshops among a unique group of multi-disciplinary participants from the fields of music, dance, theater, and the visual arts.

Themes for the conference include the role of live performances and museum visits in an age of electronic media; how philanthropists are responding to competing social agendas; cultural institutions and political and social platforms; whether the categories of high and popular art are still relevant; and the role of the arts in education.

Hershey Philbin Announces “Paparazzi 7” Fall Photo Exhibit

Camp Hill, PA—Hershey Philbin Associates, Inc., a leading national integrated marketing communications agency, announced plans today for a September 10 opening of “Paparazzi 7”, a special exhibition of 50 years of central PA award winning photojournalism.

The exhibit will highlight the work of a number of Harrisburg area paparazzi, employed by Allied Pix from 1950 to 1995, whose work documented people famous and unknown and appeared in the Harrisburg Patriot News and national publications during those years.

State Museum Planetarium to Present New Show, “Traveling Planetarium”

Harrisburg, PA—Have you ever wondered how the night sky appears in other parts of the Earth? The tilt of the Earth’s axis creates a different view of the sky for each hemisphere. The State Museum’s Planetarium will “shift the axis” in the show “Traveling Planetarium” September 4 – November 15.

Public shows are Saturday and Sunday at 1 p. and 2 p. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1.50 for children 12 and under and Senior Citizens. Friends’ members are admitted free. Business Start-Up Seminars Offered in Harrisburg

Harrisburg, PA – A series of four Business Start-Up Seminars beginning September 8th will offer new business owners in Dauphin County a chance to learn the basics of starting a business. Presented by the Kutztown University Small Business Development Center in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, all of the programs will be offered in the Dixon University Center, South Hall, Room 204. The center is at 2986 N. 2nd St., in Harrisburg. The series, which concludes in November, is taught by members of the KU Small Business Development Center staff.

The first seminar, which is offered free of charge, is on September 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. The two-hour session, “Business Resources for Your County” offers a look at community resources for business owners. The seminar examines why you should know who the key players are and how and where to locate them. Participants will receive a list of local resources helpful to business owners.

Trout Gallery to Exhibit Bearden Works at Dickinson

Carlisle, PA—The Trout Gallery at Dickinson College will present “Romare Bearden in Black-and-White: Photomontage Projections, 1964” an exhibition of collage and photomontage works which depict images surrounding the life of Bearden and other African-Americans at that time.

The exhibit, which first appeared at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, officially opens on Friday, September 4, followed by an opening reception on Tuesday, September 8, at 5 p. in the lobby of the Weiss Center for the Arts, Dickinson campus, West High Street, Carlisle. Admission is free.

Third Annual Bridge the Gap Community Fest

Harrisburg, PA – On Saturday, October 3, 1998, the third annual Bridge the Gap Community-Fest will be held on the Harrisburg State Street bridge. The entire community is invited to participate in this meaningful event to show support for ending the violence that impacts so many lives. The State Street bridge will close from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Hosted by PA HealthMATE, Inc., activities will include games, food, music, entertainment, anti-violence speakers and final judging for the Bridge the Gap Talent contest. Susqhehanna Youth Chorale Hosts Youth Chamber Choir of St. Petersburg, Russia

Hershey, PA—The Youth Chamber Choir of St. Petersburg, Russia will make a stop in Hershey on September 10 as a part of its United States tour. The 31-member choir will sing for a Vespers Concert at Derry Presbyterian Church at 7 p.

The Art of Satire at the Susquehanna Art Museum

Harrisburg, PA—The Susquehanna Art Museum announces its fall exhibit: Comedy & Caricature: The Art of Satire, September 5- November 6.

The Art of Satire presents a wide array of works from many time periods and in many mediums. Caricature and comedy are at the heart of these works. Some poke fun at the “ruling classes” while others satirize popular culture.

The museum is open from 11-3 Monday – Saturday. Admission is free.

 

Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery to Host “(De)Limned” Paintings by Susanne Slavick

Harrisburg, PA—The Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery at HACC will host an exhibit of recent paintings by Pittsburgh artist Susanne Slavick, September 14 – October 16. On September 23, Slavick will lecture before a reception in her honor, from 2-5 p. in the gallery.

Nee Danse Company Announces Weekend Workshops with Maureen Fleming

Harrisburg, PA—The Nee Danse Company will sponsor two weekend movement workshops with New York choreographer/performer Maureen Fleming. The workshops will take place October 10 & 11, and January 9 & 10, at the Nee Danse Company’s studio. The studio is located at 614 North Front Street, next to the Harvey Taylor Bridge in downtown Harrisburg.

Harrisburg Community Theatre School Expands Programming

Harrisburg, PA—Harrisburg Community Theater announces the fall semester of its Theater School program. In response to both a significant increase in student applications over the past several years as well as requests from interested adults, a number of new, innovative courses will be offered. The twelve-week semester, with sessions held on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings, begins September 12 and 15 respectively, provides a wide variety of educational experiences designed for children, teens, adults and families. Most classes are held at the East Pennsboro Middle School in Enola, and tuition is $100 per student.

Literacy Council Offers September Literacy Month Tutor Training at HACC

Harrisburg, PA—Central PA Literacy Council announced that adults who want to become prepared to tutor in the one-to-one adult Dauphin and Cumberland county program will have an opportunity to learn how in September during the free, evening sessions. Dates for the Tuesday/Thursday Tutor Training Class will be September 22, 24, 29 and October 1st from 6-9 p. at the Council Office at Room 114, Whitaker Hall on the campus of HACC. Tutor-Learner matching would occur when an adult learner’s availability and the tutor’s availability coincide.There is no fee for the training.

Girl Scouts Announce Sixth Annual Women’s Golf Outing, New Golf Clinic for Girls

Harrisburg, PA—All area women are invited to participate in Hemlock Girl Scout Council’s Sixth Annual Women’s Golf Outing on Friday, September 18, 1998 at the Hershey Country Club.

In addition, girls ages 12 to 17 are invited to attend a free junior clinic that will be offered during the outing.

The scramble outing begins at 9 a. and ends with a 2 p. lunch. Participants can attend one of two golf clinics on driving and putting led by local golf pros prior to tee off.

The $95 cost for individual players includes the golf clinic, greens fee and cart, lunch, a foursome photo and a tee prize.

Camp Hill, PA—District Attorney John F. Cherry will be “roasted” on Sunday, September 13 at the Harrisburg Hilton. All proceeds will benefit UCP of the Capital Area. Cocktail hour will begin at 5 p., dinner will be served at 6 and the roast will follow.

The format for the charity tournament will be a four-player scramble with a shotgun start. The Channels Golf Classic is open to the public. We Want Our Stern TV

Hershey, PA—Local radio station 105.7 The X, an affiliate of The Howard Stern Show, has begun a petition drive to bring Stern’s new Saturday late night television program to Central PA television.

Stern’s show is being carried on several CBS television affiliates, but not on local CBS affiliate WHP-TV

The X Team will be showing up at various places to allow Stern fans to sign the petition. All signed petitions will be photocopied and mailed to the five television stations and the local cable operators in the market.

 

Community General Osteopathic Hospital Officially Joins PinnacleHealth System

Harrisburg, PA—Officials of PinnacleHealth System recently announced the merger of Community General Osteopathic Hospital (CGOH) with PinnacleHealth. The merger announcement completes nearly eight months of negotiations, board approval and review and approval by state and federal governmental and regulatory authorities. Susquehanna Youth Chorale Hosts Youth Chamber Choir of St. Petersburg, Russia

Hershey, PA – The Youth Chamber Choir of St. Petersburg, Russia will make a stop in Hershey in September 10 as a part of its United States tour. The 31-member choir will sing for a Vespers Concert at Derry Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m.

While in Hershey, the Russian choir members will be the guests of The Susquehanna Youth Chorale and will be staying with the families of Chorale members. During their stay, they have been invited to visit the Milton Hershey School and to tour Chocolate World, where they will also have the opportunity to participate in a Hershey product taste test.
