An Interview with Wes & Angela  of BOB 94.9FM

By Michelle Yoffee-Beard

“It’s not all about rednecks and Loretta Lynn anymore,” says Angela, the female half of the locally-famous BOB 94.9 evening show. “It’s about everyone turning into country music fans. When you hear a country song, you can’t help but tap your foot or sing along to the catchy tunes” She goes on to say, “We’ve got fans coming out of the woodwork.”

According to Wes, who rounds out this dynamic duo, “BOB is simply country music with a top 40 twist. It has such diverse appeal that every listener can find something to listen to and enjoy.”

A native of Chambersburg, PA, Wes began his journey as a top Central PA radio personality as a fill-in top forty disc jockey at the age of fourteen. He comments, “While I was visiting the local radio station with a buddy, I joked around with the manager that I would be interested in becoming an on-air personality. Imagine my surprise when they actually called me to fill in on the Rick Dees Saturday morning show while the regular jock was on sick leave. She never returned and they kept me. From that point, I knew what my passion was.”

Wes & Angela of BOB 94.9FMHowever, before he actually experienced the excitement of live radio, he was preparing from the time he was a toddler to be a disc jockey by constantly pretending. “Everything became a microphone and every place became a studio. I drove my mom nuts!”

According to his constantly-jabbing sidekick, Angela, “Wes became an on-air personality because he’s an ego-maniac. I can say stuff like that about him because he’s like a little brother to me.” She continues, “Sometimes I feel like his mother as well. He called me the other day to ask me whether he could still eat eight-day old fish that was left in the refrigerator. I didn’t want to do the show by myself, so I explained the importance of cooking and eating fresh fish within a day or two.”

Wes admits to enjoying the mothering and has actually grown fond of the sassy redhead, acknowledging that the Wes & Angela show wouldn’t be nearly as popular if it weren’t for Angela.

Angela, with an extensive background in advertising, public relations and promotions found her way into the studio by accident. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a partner for the already popular Wes, Angie popped into the studio while she was working on a promotion for the station. The instant chemistry was obvious to the listeners as well as station management. “Wes called me for two weeks until I finally gave in and became his partner. We’ve been on the air together since March 17, 1997.”

Jim Rhoades, front man for local country music band, Hired Guns, says of his two bosom buddies, “They are the most fun of any night time disc jockeys – bar none! They are regular folks and their listeners know it!” He continues, “Their whole show is listener interactive and it’s obvious that their audience loves them.”

BOB 94.9’s night time show boosts it’s listener support by being nothing but requests and dedications. It all starts with the “Hot Seven at Seven” which is the top seven songs of the day played back-to-back at 7 p.m. From the completion of those top country tunes, the phone rings off the hook for dedications from those in love as well as from those suffering from the heartbreak of love gone awry. Later in the evening comes a nightly favorite bit called, “Combat Country”, which features two brand new country songs played for the audience. The audience votes for their favorite and at the end of the third night, the winner is retired and added to BOB’s play list. “It’s a real good way for us to know what our audience’s tastes are,” says Wes.

Listeners wouldn’t be surprised to know that Wes and Angela are both huge fans of country music. Wes, who never really listened to country music until accepting his position at BOB has grown extremely fond of it with Alan Jackson being his favorite artist. “I have a variety of musical tastes. In my car tape deck, you will find everything from Notorious BIG to Vince Gill. I must admit, though, that I’m country music’s biggest fan!”

With Joe Diffie being Angela’s favorite country artist, she has tastes ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughn to The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. “I really love hearing live country music. Hired Guns is my favorite local band and you will always hear country music in my house. It’s a huge part of my life.” She goes on to say that “Michael Peterson is surely the next big thing. In my opinion, he’ll be as big as Garth Brooks soon.”

The rating numbers recently revealed that this high-energy evening show was at the top, beating out all others during the last ratings period.

“Perhaps it’s because Wes paraded himself around Harrisburg in a bikini, high heels, a wig and a beautiful shade of lipstick” Angela jokes. For a local charity, Wes agreed to wear a bikini in a very public spot if they were able to raise $250.00 on air. For $500.00, he would wear the rest of the drag get-up. Their fans got what they wanted recently when he went into the city sporting a look that seemed appropriate only for the Jerry Springer show.

With the ratings soaring and a very happy audience, Wes and Angela should be gracing the airwaves in Central Pennsylvania for years to come—or until Wes ends up in jail for indecent exposure.
