Cheap Lunch With Betty
Where To Find That $5.00 Lunch...

La Fontana Restaurant
420 Market Street, Lemoyne, PA

La FontanaHi there! It’s your favorite cheap lunch guru here telling you about yet another $5 lunch I happened upon. A good friend of mine recommended La Fontana Restaurant for a little taste of Italy, so I decided to check it out. Despite my friend’s recommendation, however, I was expecting to find just another pizza joint with empty napkin dispensers on the tables and a guy named Alberto spinning pizzas in the back. Boy, was I surprised.

Much to my delight, I quickly discovered that I had scored again; lunch was definitely not going to cost over $5. La Fontana has an arsenal of subs from which to choose, including capicolla and cheese, grilled chicken, tuna, vegetarian, eggplant with sauce, and the super sub (a monstrosity topped with ham, cheese, salami, roast beef, and turkey) all for less than $4.49.

La Fontana salads are also under $5, the biggest (and most expensive) of which is the “Joe salad,” which includes roast beef and ham, lettuce, green peppers, and onions. Or you can choose from grilled chicken, grilled beef, turkey, Caesar, or the traditional tossed salad, depending on your mood. Best of all, each salad comes with a side order of homemade bread and butter to enjoy, which tastes splendidly garlicky and melts in your mouth like warm bread should.

And of course, there’s pizza. You can never go wrong with pizza, and pizza can’t go wrong at La Fontana. La Fontana offers four different pizza recipes, so you’re not stuck with just one type of pie, crust, or sauce; you can choose from thin, thick (Sicilian), or white pizza. La Fontana also has a special pizza, which includes every topping under the sun. A slice of the special pizza costs $3, and a slice of thin, thick, or white costs only $1.25. For $5 even, you can get a small thin pizza (12 inches).

With all these different ways to spend less than $5, I needed some time to deliberate. I finally decided on the cheeseburger sub and a 16-ounce Cherry Coke. My friend ordered her La Fontana usual, a grilled chicken salad and 16-ounce Coke.

We only waited about six or seven minutes for our food, which actually felt like 10 seconds because of the TV and the “Historic Italia” placemats. On the TV was the movie “Far And Away,” and the placemats contained some interesting facts about Italy. So, instead of impatiently watching the cooks perfect our lunches, we could watch Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman conquer the Wild West or read our placemats and learn about Italian geography.

We quickly became eager to eat once the food arrived, however. I felt myself gently salivate as soon as the six-inch sub stuffed with beef, cheese, and lettuce was placed right under my nose. The taste was divine. As for my friend’s chicken salad, it was good ‘n spicy—just the way she likes it.

So all you fellow cheap lunch seekers should make your way over to 420 Market Street in Lemoyne for an Italian lunch La Fontana style. Or you can call them at 730-8661 for a take-out lunch.

Double Jack’s Tavern

0798DoubleJacks.JPG (7468 bytes)It’s Betty here to tell you that if you play your cards right and get a lunch from Double Jack’s Tavern, you can definitely win all around! I was impressed looking over the menu. Soups, appetizers, salads and side orders almost all ranged from $1.00 to no more than $3.75. The appetizer that really caught my eye was their buffalo wings, so I decided to give them a try for my taste buds. Mild, medium, hot or suicide? I played it safe and ordered a bucket of 18 medium wings (a grown woman has an appetite), and I think you know pretty well I never made it to the last one. Even though I ordered those medium wings, they weren’t that spicy so next time ordering I think I’ll try out the hot or even suicide, if I really feel crazy. But the $4.75 it cost me was well worth it. I usually love eating a hearty helping of Greek salad, but I was really fixated on getting the wings. Luckily, one of my little buddies ordered one, and boy it looked good! Heaping with lettuce and thick slices of tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, and onions… you can bet that for only $3.25 that’s going to be a place I’ll order from soon again. They serve spaghetti with either meatballs, meat sauce, or veal parmesan for $3.95 to $4.75, and that includes a tossed salad and a roll. Now when it comes to subs and sandwiches, the cooks really know what they’re doing because another one of my friends ordered the grilled ham and cheese sub, and it wasn’t the deli ham in there… it was real (and real delicious) ham! The buns they put them in were soft and fresh, and you’ll never guess how much it was… $2.75! As a matter of fact, all of Double Jack’s subs are less than $2.85, and better yet, their 13 various kinds of sandwiches are priced under $2.65. To go along with that and still stay within my reasonable lunch limit of $5, I could still order a side of french fries or onion rings for only an extra $1.50, or a cup of soup for a buck even. That’s quite a deal if you ask me. If you don’t feel like making a trip out to Atlantic City, right here in Harrisburg you can place a sure bet with Double Jack’s, and that would be all you need to win a great… cheap lunch!
