Small Business Seminars Offered by Mayor’s Office of Economic Development

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed has announced a series of seminars to enhance the development of small business operations for small business owners and those thinking of starting a business. The series of sessions will be held in the City Government Center, 10 N. Second Street, and run through September 10. Persons from throughout the region are invited to attend. Each seminar costs a nominal fee of $10 per person to cover materials. Sessions include:

June 9 – 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – BUSINESS PLAN DEVELOPMENT I - Speakers: Professor Powell Adams – Elizabethtown College

June 23 – 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – BUSINESS PLAN DEVELOPMENT II - Speakers: Professor Powell Adams – Elizabethtown College

Ridge Administration Receives Nearly $11 Million to Continue Squashing Year 2000 Bug

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Ridge announced that Pennsylvania has been awarded $10.98 million by the U.S. Department of Labor to upgrade its mission-critical computer systems for Year 2000 compliance. Pennsylvania received the third largest federal grant for Year 2000, after New York and Michigan.

Funds will be used by the state Department of Labor and Industry (L&I) to update software and hardware, and to hire computer programmers with expertise in older computer languages still in use on many of L&I’s computer systems. The money will be targeted to those computer systems handling unemployment compensation and employment services, to assure uninterrupted service to recipients of those services.

Governor Ridge added that regular monthly reports tracking corrections to 45,879 state-agency computer programs show that state government is ahead of the aggressive time line for computer fixes established under the Governor’s Year 2000 Action Plan. The tracking project uses a sophisticated computer program developed by the Governor’s Year 2000 project team.

 

Hersheypark Continues to Announce Summer Line-Up

Hershey, PA – Electric Factory Concerts and Best buy present the legendary group Chicago paired with music duo Hall & Oates for one performance in the Star Pavilion at Hersheypark Stadium on Wednesday, June 24, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Arena Box Office and Ticketmaster.

With over 30 years experience together, worldwide record sales of more than 120 million, and 50 hits in the U.S. alone (20 of which were Top 10 smashes) , Chicago is still going strong.

Joining Chicago on this tour is super-duo Hall and Oates. After 25 years of recording together, Hall and Oates have released yet another album, "Marigold Sky," their first in seven years. The best-selling duo of all time, according to Billboard Magazine, is best known for hits such as "Sara Smile", "She’s Gone" and "Out of Touch".

Van Halen has been slated to perform Sunday, July 26th at 8:00 p.m. with guest Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, May 16th at the Stadium Box Office and at all Ticketmaster locations including Boscov’s and Hecht’s at 12:00 noon. For the third time in their illustrious twenty years together, the members of Van Halen have welcomed a new lead singer, Gary Cherone.This addition has resulted in one of Van Halen’s finest albums to date, Van Halen III, which marks the third incarnation in the life of America’s supreme rock ‘n ‘ roll band.

 

Mayor Announces Negro League Commemorative Events

Harrisburg, PA - Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced that the City of Harrisburg will commemorate the great history of the former Negro Baseball Leagues with a series of activities this summer, beginning with the 2nd Annual Negro League Commemorative Night at RiverSide Stadium on Saturday, June 27, beginning at 6 p.m.

The Mayor said the event is part of a summer-long series of events and activities designed to increase Central Pennsylvania sports fans’ knowledge and awareness of the many contributions made by Harrisburg’s very own Negro League team, the Harrisburg Giants. Included in the schedule which runs through September are baseball clinics, art exhibits, conferences, seminars and memorabilia shows.

Camp S.T.A.R. Promotes Strength and Independence for Adolescents

Hershey, PA – Camp S.T.A.R. (sports, teamwork and recreation) is a four-day residential sports camp for children ages 8-18 with disabilities. This year the camp will be held from June 18-21 at Messiah College in Grantham, PA.

The program is intended to help kids with disabilities find their talents in sports and recreational activities. Due to their unique physical needs, it is hard for them to participate in activities in their communities. Camp S.T.A.R. provides that opportunity for them.

Camp S.T.A.R. is a joint project of the Masonic Homes and Penn State Geisinger Rehabilitation Center. The critiera for admission are that all campers must be independent in the following areas: transfers, grooming, dressing, toileting, feeding and communication.

 

Academy of Medical Arts and Business Named 1998 Small Business Of The Year

Harrisburg, PA - The Academy of Medical Arts and Business has been named Small Business of the Year for 1998 by the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce. Academy President, Gary Kay, accepted the award at the Chamber's Fifth Annual Small Business Summit held on June 2, 1998 at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Conference Center.

The Small Business of the Year Award is presented annually to a business, locally owned and operated that employs 100 or fewer persons and is a member in good standing of the Susquehanna Alliance. The criteria considered by the judging committee are: staying power, workplace innovation and commitment to community. The award winner is recognized each year at the Chamber's Small Business Summit.

 

PinnacleHealth Childhood Lead Program to Serve 35 Counties

Harrisburg, PA – Pinnacle Health System has expanded its Childhood Lead Poisoning Program from serving the Harrisburg-Lancaster area and 16 counties to a new 35-county area. The 13 year-old Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, housed at PinnacleHealth at Polyclinic Hospital, serves the needs of lead poisoned children from birth to age six. Some of the many services offered to the children of Pennsylvania include screening, medical case management, environmental inspections and medical and developmental evaluations. The new service areas for the lead program now include much of the northeast portion of the Commonwealth including Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Reading and their surrounding counties.

Capital Area Greenbelt Opens New Section

Harrisburg, PA - Leaders of the Capital Area Greenbelt Association, the City of Harrisburg and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) met in South Harrisburg to celebrate the opening of a new section in the South Harrisburg corridor of the Capital Area Greenbelt.

The Capital Area Greenbelt is a twenty-mile greenway corridor and recreational trail which circles Harrisburg and its surrounding municipalities to connect area neighborhoods with the City's major parks.

"This opening achieves a long sought goal, to connect the neighborhoods east of Cameron Street to Riverfront and City Island" said Dr. Norman Lacasse, President of the Greenbelt Association.This goal was established in the original site plan for the Greenbelt established in 1902, to give all of the city's neighborhoods easy access to its parks and open spaces.

Mayor Reed dedicated the new section, information kiosk and parking lot for trail users located at Elliot and Cameron Streets. Contributors include AMP, Inc., the McCormick Trust, Hershey Foods, Palmer Construction, Ollie Rosenberg, Alex Grass, Robert Mumma II, Pennsy Supply, Amtrak, Vartan Supply, Shaull Equipment and Supply, the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association and Wilsbach Distributors.

 

North Street Cafe Celebrates FIVE Year Anniversary

Harrisburg, PA - The North Street Cafe will be celebrating its fifth year anniversary during the month of June. Owners James D. Maturani and Michael W. MSD Volunteer Wins Award for Her Service

Harrisburg, PA – The Museum of Scientific Discovery (MSD) is pleased to announce that Meghan McCann of Harrisburg recently received the Volunteer of the Year award for 1997 in the Youth category at the Golden Rules Award Ceremony on April 21st. By nominating a winning volunteer, MSD received a $1,000 prize.

The Golden Rule Awards Ceremony is sponsored by JC Penney to communities throughout the United States. Local volunteers are nominated through the Volunteer Center of Harrisburg. Winners are picked from categories including adult, youth, group and education. The nominating organization from the winner in each category receives $1,000 from JC Penney.

 

Two Businesses Open In Midtown Market District

Harrisburg, PA - The Bead Tree and Potter's House have opened in Harrisburg's Midtown Market District. The Bead Tree, formerly located in Strawberry Square is located at 921 N. Third Street. The beautifully decorated shop sparkles with a wide assortment of imported glass and metal beads, along with stringing supplies. Repairs and restringing are other services of the Bead Tree. Angela Stanton, the owner, has started a class to teach interested patrons how to design and make jewelry.

Susquehanna Art Museum Features Summer Workshops for Young Artists

Harrisburg, PA – The Susquehanna Art Museum, located in Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg, will feature summer camps from June – August 1998. The camps encourage young artists to expand their creativity and build their talents. These fun and educational workshops are designed to meet the needs of participants of all ages and abilities. HACC Offers Summer Music Entertainment Promotion and Business Camp for High School Musicians

Harrisburg, PA – Harrisburg Area Community College is offering a special summer camp for high school musicians interested in a career in the music and entertainment field. Music Entertainment Promotion and Business Camp is two weeks of intensive instruction geared to students in grades 10-12.

The first week, June 15-19 offers two courses. MIDI Applications for the Beginner is from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will be given intensive hands-on experience, learning the operation of the hardware, software, MIDI instruments and peripherals. Recording Studio Technology for Beginners will be taught from 1 to 4 p.m. The function and activities involved in operating a recording studio will be explored.

Week two, June 22-26 offers Songwriting and Music Publishing for the Beginner from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This course will teach the basics of songwriting including structures and forms, harmonic and melodic development. Music Promotion and Marketing will be taught from 1:30 to 4 p.m. In this course, students will be required to design their own individual marketing plans.

Susquehanna River Celebration Scheduled for
Saturday, June 13

Harrisburg, PA – The Susquehanna River Celebration will be held Saturday, June 13 from noon to 5 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Harrisburg. The event is free and will be held rain or shine.

The event, co-sponsored by the PA Chesapeake Bay Education Office and The River, 97.3 WRVV, will be packed with fun activities and educational exhibits.

Musical performances by Rosey and the Jimmy D Band and Ray Owen’s Songs from the Earth have been scheduled. Educational programs will feature live animals including birds of prey, river otters, fish and other wildlife. Other activities include outdoor grilling, gardening, colonial papermaking and t-shirt printing. Local craftspersons will be on hand and Otto the Otter and Jimbo the Clown will visit throughout the day.

Hersheypark Announces Recycling Results

Hershey, PA – Hersheypark, known for being a clean and green amusement park, is also committed to recycling. During 1997, the Park recycling program generated 175 tons of cardboard, 20 tons of office paper, 1.5 tons of aluminum cans, 4.5 tons of plastic, and 4 tons of scrap metal.

In addition to recycling used materials, officials at Hersheypark also purchase a variety of products that utilize recycled materials including Park benches, recycling containers, and rail for walkways.

 

New Susquehanna Water Trail

Harrisburg, PA – The new "Susquehanna River Trail: An Island Adventure" was opened during the River Regatta on May 23rd. The River Trail is the first water trail in the Chesapeake Bay region and one of a growing number of such projects in North America. The opening marked the culmination of nearly two years of work spearheaded by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and enthusiastically supported by organizations, stage agencies, and community partners in the Harrisburg area.

The Susquehanna River Trail extends 24-miles from Halifax to Harrisburg, incorporating 4 access sites and 10 river islands designated for day use and primitive camping. The trail will be managed in partnership by the PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, the PA Fish & Boat Commission, the City of Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay (in time, a nonprofit Susquehanna River Trail Association will be established).

Midtown Market District Recipient of Two Awards for Outstanding Achievement

Harrisburg, PA – The Midtown Market District received two awards "Outstanding Achievement" from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center (PDC) at its eighth annual conference June 4th. The award is given for excellence in downtown improvement efforts. The Midtown Market District won in the categories of organization and public relations. The Midtown market District’s recruitment package and Web site at www.MODEweekly.com/midtown was the winner in the category of public relations. The Tromp L’oeill or mural on the Furlow building at 1224 North Third Street won under the category of organization. Two New Publications for Home Care Providers

Hershey, PA – With a growing trend toward shorter hospital stays, families are assuming more responsibility for home care. Two new publications are designed to assist families with this often difficult task. "Home Care Guide for Advanced Cancer" and "Home Care Guide for HIV and AIDS" were both edited by Peter S. Houts, Ph.D., professor of behavioral science and medicine at Penn State’s College of Medicine.

Houts says the "Home Care Guide for Advanced Cancer" is for use during the terminal period of care when quality of life rather than length of life is the primary purpose for caregiving. Topics covered include what to do before and after the moment of death, the grieving process and supporting younger people as they cope with death and funerals.

The "Home Care Guide for HIV and AIDS" covers such topics as appetite problems, emotional and social stress related to HIV/AIDS and coping with depression.

"Home Care Guide for Advanced Cancer" has been published on the Internet at the American College of Physicians web site, www.acponline.org. Viewers can read and download the chapters for free.

 

United Cerebral Palsy to Hold Casual Day June 19, 1998

Camp Hill, PA – Area businesses, area you ready to "Get Casual for a Cause?" This year’s Casual Day will be held on Friday, June 19, 1998. For a contribution of $5 to United Cerebral Palsy of the Capital Area, employees receive a button and come to work in casual clothes. For a $20 donation, participates receive an "official" Casual Day tee shirt. There are "I would if I could" buttons available for those who would like to make a contribution but already dress casually or are not permitted to do so.

Corporate groups are encouraged to participate. Anyone who signs up his or her company will receive a long distance phone card worth fifteen to twenty minutes of long distance service. In addition, everyone who donates $5 will automatically be entered in a raffle for a $250 Gift Certificate courtesy of Boscov’s. Neato Burrito in Lemoyne and Harrisburg will be giving out free large sodas to people who are wearing their buttons on the 19th.

Art Association of Harrisburg Announces Summer Art Classes

Harrisburg, PA – The Art Association of Harrisburg will offer a wide variety of classes for both youth and adults during July and August, both at the 21 North Front Street facility and the studios in Reservoir Park.

The six-week semester of classes for adults and children that meet once per week begin July 20th. Art in the Park, the popular program for children ages 5 through 12, will be held in Reservoir Park in two segments, one from July 27 through August 7 and the second from August 10 through the 21st. Art in the Park classes will be held five days per week from 10 a.m. to noon with each two-week session priced at $150, supplies included. Children ages 5 through 12 may register for either pottery or drawing and painting. Each two week exhibit will conclude with an informal exhibition for students’ family and friends.

There will be a number of new adult classes for the summer, most notably the landscape painting course taught by John David Wissler in Reservoir Park on Saturdays.

Tenth Annual Harrisburg Gallery Walk Announced

Harrisburg, PA – The tenth annual Harrisburg Gallery Walk will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 13, from noon to 5 p.m., with 26 galleries participating. Now bigger and better than ever, Gallery Walk has expanded its venue to a two-day event, with more galleries than ever before for area art-lovers to enjoy.

Strawberry Square will have additional sites included in this year’s Walk: Ideas & Objects, RetroRaintree, Tangerine, Susquehanna Art Museum, Open Stage, and the Perry County Council on the Arts are all in the Square.

Most sites will have musical entertainment, at least on Sunday, and a trolley will provide free transportation on Sunday. Validated parking in the Walnut St. Garage will be offered to Gallery Walk patrons by the merchants of Strawberry Square, and free parking is available all weekend in Midtown and on most downtown streets. Whitaker Center "Topping Off" Marks Milestone in Construction Process

Harrisburg, PA – Completion of Phase One construction of Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts was marked with the centuries-old custom of "topping off" the building. At a signal from Building Committee Chair James B. Grandon, Jr., the last roof truss, a 10-foot steel beam bearing an evergreen tree, was hoisted by crane for all to see at Third and Market streets. Local dignitaries including Mayor Stephen R. Reed, Board Chair Harold A. McInnes, Whitaker Center President and CEO Thomas Stone and Wohlsen Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary Robert S. Wohlsen, Jr., donned hard hats to oversee this milestone toward completion of the long-awaited center. The evergreen tree represents an eighth century Scandinavian tradition honoring the trees that provided lumber for construction of the building.

 

Historic Harrisburg House & Garden Tour

Harrisburg, PA – One of Central Pennsylvania’s most enjoyable Springtime events is the annual Historic Harrisburg House & Garden Tour.

Home Builders Association Names Associate and Builder of the Year

Harrisburg, PA – The Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Harrisburg named Robert J. Fisher of R. J. Fisher & Associates the 1997 Associate of the Year and George Carlson of Carlson Construction as the 1997 Builder of the Year.

M. Fisher received the honor because of his contributions and commitment as Chairman of Local and State Legislative Committees, as well as his active participation on the executive committee and the new building committee. Mr. Fisher has been a loyal and supportive member of the Home Builders Association since June of 1988.

George Carlson received his honor for his many contributions to the local association as well as at the state and national level. He has also been an active participant and Chairman of New Building Committee, past president of the association and has received numerous building awards through the Parade of Homes, Home-A-Rama and Pyramid Awards programs. George has been a loyal and supportive member of the Home Builders Association since October of 1980.

We congratulate both Mr. Carlson and Mr. Fisher for a job well done.
