Melstock ’98:
A Modern Folk Festival

By Mitchell L. Hillman, Jr.

What was a private party four years ago has become a music festival, featuring over twelve hours of live music, dancing, food, good vibes, drum circles and overnight camping. Melstock 98 will be sure to impress crowds Saturday, June 27 with many great musical acts, both local and national.

“It started out as a small party back in 1995. In ‘97 it grew to attract over 300 people. This year we hope to play it safe, yet exceed expectations from past events,” said Mike Zarcone, director of marketing and technology for NewMarket Productions. “We will at the same time show people in the surrounding community that people can come to expect some of the best times when they attend a ‘NewMarket’ event.”

In addition to the main stage attractions, there will also be an all-night acoustic stage sponsored by the Wire in New Cumberland that will run from midnight to dawn.

“It’s an event where people can relax peacefully in a positive atmosphere, enjoy the outdoors and listen to some really great music,” said Zarcone.

Headlining this event will be the Hydrophonics recording artists the Disco Biscuits from Philadelphia, a jam band that merges everything from electronica to jazz will top off the occasion with their frenetic two hour plus set. Their new album Uncivilized Area was released nationally last month. Other bands featured at Melstock 98 include, Shippensburg’s brilliant Woodstew, national act Juggling Suns, local faves Into the Woods and Mike Banks’ band Soleil.

There will be one more mainstage band yet to be announced and many other surprises planned by the folks at NewMarket Productions and kept secret until their unveiling at the festival.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own food, beverages and other amenities. Gates open at 10 am and music begins at noon. Parking is limited, overnight camping is included with the price of admission and is encouraged. Attendees must be at least 18 years of age to attend and 21 years or older to consume alcoholic beverages. This is a “bring your own” event, guests will be carded at the gate.

Tickets are $15, in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets are currently available at The Groove, 335 Bridge Street in New Cumberland and In Tunes at 6500 Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg. Melstock 98 will be held on Sample Bridge Road in Mechanicsburg. For detailed information and directions visit: http://www.newmarketproductions.com/melstock98.
