MOED is Key Resource for City Businesses

By Elizabeth A. Thomas

Small business owners in the city of Harrisburg are privileged compared to their counterparts in other cities or suburbs. In a city committed to continued economic growth and development, there is a comprehensive resource standing ready to assist you. The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (MOED) is responsible for the promotion and advancement of business and industrial development in the City (see sidebar for a summary of available services).

MOED is a particularly useful resource to minority and women-owned businesses, but offers assistance to anyone requesting it. As MBE Development Specialist Marie Bessick says, “what benefits the general public, benefits the city as well.”

MOED helps business owners chart their courses, plan for their futures, and jump over surprise or expected hurdles. If you’re just starting out, take some time to meet with MOED. They’ll help you assess your knowledge and capabilities and advise you on the direction to take and resources that are available to you. Business owners can contact MOED with questions ranging from basic to complicated. If MOED doesn’t have the answer, they’ll find it for you.

One of the most valued MOED services is their small business seminar series. The upcoming seminar is a two-part series on Business Plan Development.

We’re all familiar with the axiom: If you fail to plan, then plan to fail. So many small businesses fail because they didn’t look forward—they only saw today, or tomorrow, or the rest of the week. But what about next month, next year, 3 or 5 years from now? Composing a business plan is of utmost importance to every business owner—whether you’re starting a new venture or if you’ve been fortunate enough to survive for years without one (don’t count on your good fortune holding out forever).

Professor Powell Adams from Elizabethtown College will be conducting this seminar series. Join other business owners in identifying the components of a business plan; planning factors that are crucial and specific to your type of business; how and when to amend your business plan; and how to prepare for the unexpected. If you don’t have a business plan, you can’t afford to miss this seminar series.

The Business Plan Development seminar will be held on June 9th (part 1) and 23rd (part 2) from 9:30 a.m. t o 11:30 a.m. at the City Government Center, 10 North Second Street. The cost is $10 per person, per session. For a mere $20, you can unlock the key to a successful future. It’s an investment whose return will multiply many times over in the coming years. For more information or to register, call MOED at 255-3027.

MOED is proud to serve as a resource to the business owners contributing to Harrisburg’s continued growth. Help for Harrisburg businesses is right around the corner…take advantage of it!
