Open Stage Offers New Summer Program for Teens

Harrisburg, PA – The Studio/School of Open Stage is offering an innovative new Teen program for the summer. Funded in part by the AMP Foundation and CoreStates Bank, “ARTSCI ‘98” is a challenging way for young people from 12-16 to spend two weeks exploring common concepts in science and the arts. The program, housed at Open Stage from 9 am to 3 pm, runs July 6-16 (Session One), and July 20-30 (Session Two).

Based on the idea that an “integrated” way of learning is more significant and personal to students, program directors Anne Alsedek and Brian Eyer have designed a two-week, all-day exploration of the work of the 17th Century physicist Isaac Newton coupled with the theory of 19th and 20th century theatre innovator, Konstantin Stanislavsky. The program is titled “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants”.

Students in the program will spend their days doing science experiments in force and motion, friction, and the study of Newton’s famous Laws, and relating the scientific theory and lab work to Stanislavsky’s “science” of acting, also based on natural laws. Activities in drama and movement will culminate in a public sharing of the students’ experiences. A field trip to Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute and Art Museum and to local libraries will provide research opportunities.

Parents and students interested in ARTSCI ’98 should contact Open Stage at 232-OPEN.

Time to Get on Board

Harrisburg, PA – The “Lunch Express” also known as the free midday trolley shuttle service, is expanding to offer free rides to more places during lunch hours in downtown Harrisburg. The new name captures the essence of the new schedule, which cuts the time at each trolley stop to ten minute intervals. The trolley loop has also been redesigned to include the Transportation Center (Harrisburg Train Station), Fourth and Market Streets, and Third and Walnut Street stops. Increasing traffic congestion and fewer parking spaces makes the trolley an attractive option of moving throughout the downtown during lunch hour.

The new route and schedule began in April and will run daily from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two 23-seat trolleys will connect major dining and shopping areas including Strawberry Square, Midtown Market District and Broad Street Market.

The State Museum of Pa Opens Temporary Exhibit

Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania has opened its new temporary exhibit, Slinkys, Sluggers and Rock and Roll. The exhibit will highlight popular pastimes in Pennsylvania from the 1950s and 1960s. It will serve as a preview for a permanent exhibit on the history of play and popular culture in Pennsylvania which is scheduled to open in the year 2001 as part of the new Pennsylvania History Galleries.

Slinkys, Sluggers and Rock and Roll explores some of the more popular fads of the post World War II years, long considered a critical period in American history. Suburbanization, highways and a booming economy altered the way many Americans and Pennsylvanians lived and ushered in a new set of diversions that changed the way Pennsylvanians had fun. Television, drive-in theaters and rock-and-roll music were just some of the pastimes that were marketed to postwar children-referred to today as baby boomers. Through a mix of historical photographs, documents and memorabilia, this exhibit will tell the story behind such popular icons as the Slinky, Little League Baseball and American Bandstand, all of which originated in Pennsylvania.

After its run at The State Museum, Slinkys, Sluggers and Rock and Roll will travel to other locations across the Commonwealth. For more info. call 787-7789.
