Cheap Lunch with Betty

Lemoyne’s Family Restaurant
245 Hummel Avenue, Lemoyne
717-763-8839
Betty here with yet another delicious lunch just the way I like it…you guessed it – cheap! Lemoyne’s Family Restaurant has a great variety of lunch specials for every day of the week. So many different kinds, in fact, that I bet even a finicky eater would have a hard time deciding what they wanted.

All their lunch specials are under $5 and are served with a choice of vegetables, chips or fries. Their subs, such as italian steak, beef, turkey or ham and cheese, cost between $3.60 and $3.95 and include an order of fries. Soups are only $1 a cup or $1.40 a bowl. Customers are also offered sides like fries, fruit, onion rings or tossed salad for only an additional $1.50. Beverages, both hot and cold, are under $1.

There are so many kinds of burgers at Lemoyne’s Family Restaurant, I couldn’t count them all. Their sandwiches include beef, turkey, ham, BLT, egg salad with olives, grilled cheese and tuna fish. I could go on, but you’ll just have to go see for yourself. They serve their sandwiches with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, chips (quite a hefty pile) and pickles (the good crinkle cut, thick-sliced kind) and they are so cheap, I could buy several for $5! That’s right, the prices on the sandwiches start at $1.65 and hit the ceiling at a whopping $2.95. Now, that’s a good deal! For that price, you may think they skimp on the portions…wrong! My lunch buddy for the day ordered a turkey sandwich and, if you ask me (and you are, since I’m writing the review), it was a fair-sized sandwich.

I ordered the pizza burger with fries for $3.95, which was shortly thereafter served to me with a smile. The dining area is kept remarkably clean and, lucky for me since I can’t stand the heat at my age, their ceiling fans kept me nice and cool.

As soon as my meal was put in front of me, I couldn’t wait to dig in it looked so yummy. The huge sesame bun was crispy and toasty on the outside and soft and fresh on the inside..marvelous! The burger was nice and hot and covered in a thick layer of melted cheese and what tasted like a homemade chunky red meat sauce. The fries were quite tasty and had obviously been in the fryer for just the perfect amount of time. The cooks at Lemoyne’s Family Restaurant definitely know what they’re doing!

All the food at Lemoyne’s Family Restaurant is available ‘to go’ and will make a fine lunch for all those busy people who don’t have time to sit down and enjoy the homey atmosphere. But, if you have the time, I suggest you sit yourself down and treat yourself to some of that fine ‘family’ cooking.

The Glass Lounge
4745 N. Front Street, Harrisburg

For my second foray into the world of the under $5.00 cheap lunch, I decided to try The Glass Lounge on Front Street. I had heard marvelous things for years about their steaks, so I decided to give them a try for lunch, hoping I’d find the same flavorful meals that had drawn customers there for years. I hit the jackpot.

My lunch companions and I entered the dim and smoky interior through the bar area and sat ourselves in the dining room off the bar. Businesspeople in suits sat side by side with obvious locals out to enjoy the beautiful day and the food. Now, if you’re looking for a place for some quiet, intimate conversation, the Glass Lounge is NOT the place. It’s very noisy. But, since I don’t like people to talk to me when I’m trying to eat, I don’t care, so it suited me fine.

My lunch companions and I started off with a cup of the soup of the day, spicy potato, for $1.95. The soup had huge chunks of potatoes, real bacon bits and chunks of colorful celery and carrots, plus a goodly spicing of pepper. It was yummy. Having had our appetites whetted, we got down to business with our entrees. I had the Grilled Ham & Cheese sandwich for $4.25 while my companions had the Cheeseburger for $3.10 and a 4 oz. Haddock Sandwich for $2.95.

All three sandwiches were very large and were stuffed with ingredients. The cheeseburger was actually larger than the bun, how often do you see that? Not very! Plus, the bun had been nicely toasted. My sandwich was just bursting with ham that had been grilled separately from the bread then piled onto the two grilled slices. Pieces of ham kept falling out of the sandwich, it was stuffed so full of meat. My partner’s fish sandwich was hot and crispy on the outside, non-fishy on the inside (very important for that landlubber). The sandwiches came with mounds of potato chips, pickles and lettuce garnish. The cheeseburger-eater opted for the french fries for an additional $1.35, which were obviously hand-cut and deep fried to oily perfection.

The beverages were a little expensive ($1.50 for the ice tea, $1.70 for the soda), but that’s to be expected in an establishment that sells alcohol. Refills on the ice tea were free, which is good. Refills on the soda were not, which is bad. But, considering the quality of the food, I cranked open my moth-eaten wallet (since they don’t take credit cards) and paid with a smile (and a very full stomach).

The Glass Lounge has take-out service as well as their in-house seating and they serve their lunch menu all day long. So, the next time you have a hankering for some fantastic food of the grilled variety, check out the Glass Lounge on Front Street. And don’t forget your cash since it’s one place that doesn’t take American Express OR Visa.
