Dauphin County Commissioners Set Challenge for Surrounding Counties Harrisburg, PA Dauphin County stepped forward today to pledge support to the development of the regions newest attraction, the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. The Dauphin County Board of Commissioners have announced the countys commitment of $25,000 a year for the next four years for a total of $100,000 to the new cultural facility under construction in downtown Harrisburg. Vice-Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Russell L. Sheaffer stated, Dauphin County is very proud to be part of this exciting project and we hope that other counties will make a similar commitment to this effort. And, according to Harold A. McInnes, Whitaker Center Board Chair, The Dauphin County commitment establishes a challenge to other counties in the midstate. It would be a significant and positive sign for Central Pennsylvania if we could count all of the counties among our supporters. Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development statistics show that more people traveled to Central Pennsylvania than to any other region of the state and the numbers will grow with the arrival of new attractions such as the Whitaker Center, says Thomas R. Stone, PhD, CFRE, President and CEO of the Whitaker Center. Governor Ridge has charged the States Center for Travel, Tourism and Film with building overnight stays in Central Pennsylvania. The best way to do this is 'packaging' and putting together vacation destinations of which the Whitaker Center is a prime example. The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is a not-for-profit corporation formed to develop and operate a Center-city facility which includes the flexible 660-seat Sunoco Performance Theater, an intimate 3-tiered theater which can accommodate various regional performing groups. The Harrisburg Community Theatre will be the only named resident theater company to perform in the Whitaker Centers performing arts theater. The Wednesday Club will become the resident music society. Other cultural organizations have also expressed interest in establishing residency status. Additionally, assets of the Museum of Scientific Discovery will relocate to the Centers dynamic interactive science center thereby continuing the scientific and educational offerings to the community enjoyed by the Museum of Scientific Discovery. The Center also includes a 200-seat IMAX theater (IMAX is a registered trademark of IMAX Corporation); a smaller black box theater with flexible seating for up to 150 people, related educational space; and elegant patron and civic reception space. The development budget of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is projected at $51 million, including a $4 million endowment. The Whitaker Center is scheduled to open in the Fall of 1999.
Mixing Hot-Wings, Golf and Business! Harrisburg, PA - A conversation about golf while eating hot-wings was all it took for a 32-year old Mechanicsburg man to enter the highly competitive golf apparel industry. I was at KoKomo's with some friends when a Nike commercial came on the big screen, commented Ziemba. I turned to my wingmen and said, wouldnt it be great to compete against that monopoly? The guys laughed, but a month later Rob Ziemba had a unique logo, a catchy phrase and was ready to enter the marketplace as Z-WEAR GOLF. A very small player in a very big game dominated by huge names, heavy cash and hard-core advertising. After placing ads around the country in golf tabloids, Ziemba got a break locally when Golf Augusta Pro Shop in Hershey accepted the new line. According to owners Jeff and Mary DeCoen, Z-WEAR could be a good seller once the name gets out there. So much sportswear looks alike, Z-WEAR offers something different. Ziemba is helping with the promotion and is very excited about placing his spring line of hats and shirts on store shelves by April. Additional information can be gained by calling Rob Ziemba directly at Z-WEAR GOLF 838-8402.
