| MODEs NEWSREEL30th Annual Oscar Winners for 1957
Last month, the
winners of the 30th Annual Oscar Awards for 1957 were announced. The Best Picture award
went to "Bridge On the River Kwai" and also garnered its leading man, Alec
Guinness, the Best Actor Award. Best Actress went to Joanne Woodward for "The Three
Faces of Eve". Joanne had been so convinced that she was not going to win, she
refused to invest a lot of money in a dress for this gala event. She went out and spent
$125 on material and made the dress she wore to the awards ceremony. Even after her name
had been called, Joanne thought someone elses name had been announced and had to be
coached out of her seat by her neighbors. Luckily for Ms. Woodward, her sewing skills
matched her acting skills and her homemade dress didnt look out of place amongst all
those Diors.
Best Supporting Actor went to Red Buttons for
"Sayonara". That role comprised Reds first departure from the comedic work
for which hes best known. Red said that his fans did not appreciate the divergence
and he felt quite frustrated by their response. Winning the Oscar was a justification for
him. Best Supporting Actress also went to a "Sayonara" cast member, Miyoshi
Umeki.
