Cheap Lunch with Betty

The Spot
100 North 2nd Street, Harrisburg, Pa.
Ce3-5271

The Spot really does hit the spot in this penny pincher’s wallet… and my tummy! I had hopped on down to grab a cool lunch, playing some tunes in my ’57 Ford. I ordered the Spot special for the day (since I was there between 11-2), instead of my usual Spotdog and milkshake. The small steaksub with french fries plus soda is probably going to be a big hit in the late 1990’s, but it’s supposed to cost $4.15 then, can you believe that! Right now it’s only $.85 which is probably what you’d need to get a scoop of ice cream forty years from now. I heard through the grapevine that those prices would actually still be a great catch for this Betty’s budget…jeepers!

I played my favorite song, “Lollipop,” by the Chordettes on the jukebox, and before I knew it lunch was served. I hope the Spot’s going to keep their delicious, six inch crusty bun that’s packed with juicy steak, onions and green peppers. You can’t go wrong with those hot peppers on top! The fries are perfect because they aren’t greasy one bit, just the way mom makes them.

In between bites, I looked up at the menu and I can just imagine what their prices are going to be. $1.60 for a side of fries or onion rings, $4.15 for a turkey club, to $4.35 for a chef salad. I guess in those times they will be good deals. All their specials which include chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers, fish sandwiches and hotdogs are served with lots of french fries or a cup of soup. All will be less than $5. Now, that will be cheap! Soups include chili, ham and bean, veggie beef, MD crab, and more. Maybe the Spotdogs would end up costing a whole $1.40 and then 10 cents more for cheese on it. Wow! I can’t bear to think of what the world is coming to and my food was just starting to smell so good it was calling for me not to let it sit a second longer.

My friends Judy Kerney and Tami Mohney arrived and they told me they just saw Bobby outside smoking a cigarette! He’s such a rebel. They ordered the same as I did, but Judy says she’s hooked on the Spotdogs. It was Tami’s first time eating the steaksub, and she took the words right out of my mouth when she said, “My first cheesesteak won’t be my last!”

The Pep Grill Restaurant
209-211 Walnut Street Harrisburg, Pa.
Ce 3-9180
Betty here for lunch with my pal Marcy. Let me just tell you, the Pep Grill is great! When they say special… they mean special, daddy-o! Since I’m so starved and trying to save money for my highschool morp, I decided to order the Three decker Club Sandwich with milk for $1. That would definitely do the job. Marcy ordered the Greek Salad because she loves their fresh heaping bowl of lettuce and the to-die-for feta cheese with olives, tomatoes, and three packets of crackers. She even ordered coffee with cream for ten cents, even though Mom says it'll stunt your growth.

We told the kind hostess we wanted to give our compliments to the owner on such a cool place, but she said they would be out of town for a long, long time (40 years to be exact) and suggested we speak with little Maggie (who talked really well for her age.) She told us that her mother, Katherine, would own the place in 1975 and someday she, Maggie, was going to run the place. We wished her good luck- not that she’d need it!

The Pep Grill has such a nice atmosphere, is right in the middle of the city and is oh so cheap!!! Just the way I like it. The waitress didn’t take long at all to serve us, and, boy, were we in heaven. Marcy and I couldn’t have been happier because their meals were so big we had to take some home with us! We figured that would be cool since we were going to get together and watch Red Skelton later, anyway.

They have so much variety at the Pep Grill that I bet if Marcy and I went there every day for a year we could order something different each time. Foods range from pasta, subs, sandwiches, and seafood to appetizers, entrees, salads, and sides… plus a whole lot of beverages, both alcoholic (Oohh!) and non, plus cocktails and wines.

Maggie came back to show us the menu that she had made up for 1998 (done in crayon, of course). She said that in 40 years prices will go up but the Pep Grill prices will still be low. There would be a $10 minimum order, but that would be cool because I could bring Marcy (unless she asks Timmy to the morp). We could split the bill and it would still be cheap since all their lunch specials are under $5!
